2014 Scion FRS manual - need tips

Hi all,

I recently got my first manual car and am looking for tips on getting the best fuel economy out of my vehicle. The car is a 2014 Scion FRS - manual 6 speed transmission. It weights ~2750lbs (add 145lbs for me). When I start school in a couple of weeks my commute is going to be ~1.2 miles long w/ aproximately 7-8 traffic lights. Since it will mostly be city driving (Newark, NJ), the maximum speeds reached will be 25mph.

I am currently in the process of familiarizing myself with the manual transmission and the car itself. I could use some tips on achieving the maximum fuel efficiency of my FRS. I have some basic knowledge on the basics of achieving maximum fuel economy in the city ie coasting to lights etc. I have highlighted specific areas in which I could use some help on below;

-Coast to red lights in Neutral or in gear? - I have watched youtube videos which show that it is better and safer to leave the car in gear. Being a manual transmission newbie, is coasting to a stop in 3rd gear (~25mph) safe for the transmission??? What I have been doing currently is shifting into neutral when I am ~100 ft from the red light. Admittedly I am only doing this because I'm afraid of downshifting through the gears (I always buck/lurch) when downshifting .

- How long do I warm up the vehicle? For context, my car's engine is pretty good in letting you know when it is warmed up. The rpm's drop from an idle of 1.5k to 0.5k usually after 60 seconds on a sunny day (~80 F). I guess my question is, is it advisable to start car > let it idle for 30 secs > start driving [as long as I'm under 3k rpm.... this shouldn't be too hard since I have to deal w/ stop signs + traffic lights at almost every block].

- This isn't necessarily related to hypermiling but can someone link me a good downshifting w/ rev matching tutorial. I still don't know when I should rev match/blip throttle. Should I do it in neutral or when I'm in gear. The reason I'm confused is because I was told by my dad to never press clutch and gas at the same time. And it seems that's exactly what you do when rev matching. . . This is my current routine. Let's say I wan't to downshift from 4th to 3rd. I light[lift] off gas > brake a little > press clutch > shift into neutral > blip throttle (while clutch is still pressed) > and then shift into 3rd gear > while slowly letting out clutch AND giving it gas at the same time. Let me know if that is the correct way to do it.

Looking forward to your replies.
