Akira (1988)-"TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

This movie is a groundbreaking work of animation and broke new ground as it's one of the films that put Japanese animation on the map.

It was a box-office success in it's country in 1988 and earning rave reviews, then it came to the US in December 27th 1989 then around the entire country in select theaters in the US/Canada in 1990 and around the world.

It earned great reviews by critics and due to word of mouth on video, it became a hit on video and cable thus Japanese animation boom began higher in the US due to this movie and is a very influential movie inspiring many things from The Matrix to Chronicle to more. This movie has big time fans from Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, the Wachowskis, James Cameron, Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich and so much more.

This movie was different than other anime due to it's animation style and all that as it was an expensive product as it has detailed animation, fluid movements and all that with early CGI that still holds up and proved animation was not just a kids thing but for adults too as it had tons of graphic violence ala Robocop.

I saw this when i was 13 on video after hearing about it on the internet, movie magazines and movie books as i decided to rent it, i loved it. I even got the Criterion laserdisc, some t-shirts as a teen, cap, poster, CD soundtrack and all that.

I got the 3-disc 24th anniversary blu-ray 2 years ago and it looks/sounds great on HD. It even has the original 1989 English Dub with Leonardo the turtle himself as Keneda which i remembered very fondly.

A must see for sci-fi and animation fans.
