Help with improving mpg

Hi, I drive a 2003 elantra MT averaging about 38 mpg with pulse and glide and coasting but I want to improve mpg over the coming summer months. What can I do to improve?

Android Auto in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

Earlier this week Hyundai became the first car company to launch Android Auto within its production vehicles. Android Auto is premiering on the 2015 Sonata with Navigation at dealerships nationwide and later on other Hyundai models.

At any given moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. Android Auto helps keep drivers’ eyes and attention on the road by integrating the advanced driving-related functions of the user’s smartphone with the familiar centralized screen, physical controls and microphone of their car. Furthermore, the smartphone’s screen becomes “locked,” so drivers are not tempted to look down and interact with their phones directly while Android Auto is in use.

Owners of existing 2015 Sonata with Navigation can get the Android Auto software update free of charge at Hyundai dealers. Later this summer, owners can visit http://ift.tt/1e5VHGK and download the Android Auto software onto a USB memory drive. Owners will need a MyHyundai account to start the Android Auto download. A MyHyundai account requires name, address and a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Once the USB with the Android Auto software is inserted into their Sonata’s USB port, it will automatically update the vehicle’s Navigation system to make it Android Auto compatible. The Android Auto compatible Navigation system with an eight-inch touchscreen display is available on the Sonata Sport, Eco, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models.

Owners will need the Android 5.0 “Lollipop” operating system or later meaning not everyone’s smartphone is capable.

A micro USB cable is required to connect the phone to the car’s USB port. The first time an owner plugs his or her phone into their parked Sonata, the phone will prompt the download of the Android Auto companion app from the Google Play. Users of Android Auto will instantly recognize familiar Android phone applications, such as Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, phone calling and Google Play Music upon connecting their Android phone to their Hyundai vehicle. These applications can be controlled by voice, steering wheel controls and touchscreen. Android Auto also will offer many popular third-party audio apps that owners have on their phones, including iHeart Radio, Spotify, TuneIn, NPR, Stitcher, Skype, TextMe and many more. Owners can find out up-to-date information about phone compatibility at Google – Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

Of all the full sized gasoline fueled pickup trucks I have driven, this is the most fuel efficient. Especially with the std. 3.21 rear ratio. Now let’s talk about the V6 Pentastar family.

The FCA US workhorse just happens to be the Pentastar V-6 engine family which just surpassed the 5 million unit mark earlier this month.

Like I said above, the 3.6L Pentastar mated to the 8-speed AT makes the RAM 1500 more efficient than anything offered in the segment despite slightly lower EPA ratings. I would not want to be a competitor even with their compact truck offerings going up against this powerful and efficient monster under the hood.

2015 Ford C-MAX Energi - $32,595 to start incl. D&H while offering owners a 19-mile AER and a 40/36 mpgUS city/highway rating in charge sustaining mode when off the plug.

Ford is offering competitors access to its electrified vehicle technology patents.

According to the release, in 2014, Ford filed more than 400 patents dedicated to electrified vehicle technologies. This is more than 20 percent of the patents the company filed – totaling more than 2,000 applications.

Ford is a leader in this area with more than 650 electrified vehicle patents and approximately 1,000 pending patent applications on electrified vehicle technologies.

Ford’s believes sharing its patented technologies will promote faster development of future inventions as all automakers look toward greater opportunities.

To access Ford’s patents and published patent applications, interested parties can contact the company’s technology commercialization and licensing office. The patents would be available for a fee.

  • Method and Apparatus for Battery Charge Balancing, patent No. US5764027: The patent covers passive cell balancing: discharging a cell through a resistor to lower the state of charge to match other cells. This innovation extends battery run time and overall life. This is the first invention to enable battery balancing at any time, instead of only while charging, and it enables the use of lithium-ion batteries in electrified vehicles. It was invented long before Li-Ion battery-powered vehicles became commonplace.

  • Temperature Dependent Regenerative Brake System for Electric Vehicle, patent No. US6275763: The technology works to maximize the amount of energy recaptured in a hybrid vehicle through regenerative braking. By improving the interplay between normal friction brakes and regenerative braking during stopping at certain air temperatures, a driver is able to recapture more energy than previously possible, helping the motorist drive farther on a charge.

  • Driving Behavior Feedback Interface, patent No. US8880290: The patent provides a system and method for monitoring driver inputs such as braking and accelerating, and vehicle parameters including energy consumption to assess driving behavior. The feedback can be used to coach future driving behavior that may translate into better long-term driving habits and improve fuel economy. This technology also has enabled drivers of non-electrified vehicles, such as a Ford Focus, to develop better driving habits.
Sounds like a win-win for the consumer and a very unusual move by Ford. I hope it leads to improved HEV/PHEV/BEVs in the near future and better industry collaboration on the next generation of electrified vehicles heading our way.

With more than 2.3 billion smartphones in use around the world and rising, auto buyers are demanding better integration between their phones and their vehicles. Whether they have an Apple or Android phone, Chevrolet will provide to its future customers the smartest, simplest connected driving experience possible.

For the 2016 model year, Chevrolet will offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to more models than any automotive brand. The 14 Chevrolet models include the all-new 2016 Cruze.

Chevrolet’s seven-inch MyLink infotainment system gives owners a smart way to access both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The eight-inch version of MyLink will be compatible only with Apple CarPlay at the beginning of the 2016 model year. R&D on the 8” MyLink systems are not yet complete so Android Auto may be available later in the 2016 model year.

Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem that includes WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, Spotify, and podcast players. A full list of supported apps is available at Android.com/auto.

Apple CarPlay takes the iPhone features you’d want to access while driving and puts them on the vehicle’s display in a smart, simple manner. That allows drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Apple CarPlay supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third-party apps.

Many features can be controlled via voice commands through a button on the steering wheel, helping drivers spend more time with eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Chevrolet was the first brand to introduce Siri Eyes Free functionality and the first and only car company to offer OnStar 4G LTE across a range of cars, trucks and crossovers in the U.S. and Canada.


Chevrolet customers in markets around the world including Brazil, Mexico and Canada will benefit from this new level of smartphone integration. Specific market availability for Android Auto can be found here.

Using either application is simple in a compatible 2016 Chevrolet. A “Projection” icon on the MyLink screen is visible when a phone is not connected, then changes to indicate either CarPlay or Android Auto (whichever is applicable) when a compatible phone is connected via USB. Android Auto requires a phone running the Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or above, while Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or later.

Compatible apps need to be downloaded to a phone before using. Apple and Google’s privacy statements and terms of use apply. Data plan rates may also apply.

During the Shell Dual-Fuel Charger drive, this Rest Area in MS was one of the nicest. What if you knew about the full complement of facilities before you got there?

So you are on a road trip and you need to stop to take a leak. Normally you bring up Google and ask for nearest Rest Area. But what if you have special needs? Toyota had an idea that would be cool to have here. Let’s hope it expands…

For wheelchair users and others with disabilities and/or special needs, certain aspects of traveling by car can be problematic and uncomfortable. Finding the nearest special needs restroom presents a challenge when planning a trip.

To help address this problem, Toyota is launched its newly-developed Restroom Finder app. The app, which works in conjunction with the Toyota T-Connect and Lexus G-Link telematics systems, lets users search for special needs restrooms located in rest areas on highways and public roads.

Restroom Finder provides detailed information about facilities, such as ease of access to the restrooms, and covers a wide variety of service areas, including Toyota's own Welcab Stations2. At present, the app offers information for three prefectures in the Tokai region (Aichi, Gifu and Mie). It also provides route guidance to facilities fitting the parameters within these regions.

The app can filter search results by facility type or user needs, including location of handrails or presence of care beds, diaper-changing tables, and ostomate (<-- Not sure what that means?) facilities. Users can view detailed information on facilities that fit the search parameters and set them as destinations. In addition, even if a destination that has already been set in the initial navigation screen, facilities can be added on route or as additional destinations.

Roleplaying: Acting, or Self-Insert?

I've seen roleplaying defined as a few things, and as the key to having fun and being immersed.

There's the common trope of acting; you disappear yourself inside another character.

Then there's simply playing out how you'd act if it was basically you with a few differences.

I feel like most people just say "roleplaying" when they mean one or the other, which can create some misunderstandings. Which one are you supposed to be doing? When a new player asks "how do I play?" what are you supposed to say?

S60 Update

It's been a little over 5 months since I got the S60 and I've put just shy of 3,000mi on it. (If nothing else I've saved gas by not driving anywhere. ;) ) So far I have mostly good things to report.

It's a little early to come to a conclusion on fuel economy since the car is new, almost all of my miles have been around town, and this winter was horrendous. No past year in my mileage logs can possibly compete for prolonged low temperatures. That said, I was able to find a few tanks from the V70 that should be comparable based on similar average temperature and average speeds. The result is a 30-40% improvement in FE. The S60 is only 100lb lighter, I haven't been driving fast enough for aerodynamics to be worth much, and I've been commuting along the same route that I always have. In short, the Drive-E 4-pot does as well as one could hope for a 240hp engine.

In all other respects I'm still really pleased with the S60. It does all the things that a car in its segment is supposed to do. It's the first car I've owned in years that I feel like driving just for the sake of spending some time on a back road in nice weather. (My old Accord Coupe was probably the last.) The only black marks come in the form of a few intermittent rattles, the most significant of which was an easy fix and the others seem to have gone dormant since spring arrived.

The only funny thing is that as much as I like the car, I haven't really "bonded" with it. I don't know what that's about. It could be that I just don't care about these things as much as I used to. That wouldn't be a terrible thing. Or it could be that I have to drive it somewhere other than to and from work. Or maybe this is just "meeting your hero" syndrome. It could be that the car does its job so well and with so little drama that there's nothing left to be excited about. There's no sense of accomplishment.

Op verzoek heb ik dus de nieuwe voetbalpiramide gemaakt. Ik heb hem nu tot en met de hoofdklasse gemaakt. De huidige promotie-degradatie playoffs zorgen er op de een of andere manier voor dat hij maar voor één seizoen draait. Dus daarom heb ik het maar even op de Engelse manier ingesteld: laatste 3 teams degraderen, 2 teams promoveren en de laatste promotieplek wordt door de nummer 3 t/m 6 beslist. Er zijn ook geen periodes. Ik heb de indeling van @Steinbolt; aangehouden.

Ook moet ik nog even kijken hoe ik Brabant United het beste laat werken. Brabant United is nu een aparte club met een eigen jeugdopleiding. FC Den Bosch en RKC zijn nu de moederclub die gratis hun spelers kunnen overnemen en zelf hun spelers kunnen verhuren. Brabant United heeft een maximumleeftijd van 21.

Tweede elftallen zijn een B-team. Ik kan niet apart voor die teams aparte regels opstellen. Ik zou er -21 teams van kunnen maken of zoals in Spanje en Duitsland dat teams met een vaste selectie werken.

Er zal later waarschijnlijk nog wel een update volgen.

Vandaag 4e geworden met Feyenoord. In de finale van de beker verloren van PSV, de kampioen.

Nu moet ik play-offs spelen voor de Europa League? Ik zou toch rechtstreeks gekwalificeerd moeten zijn? Ofwel als verliezend finalist van de beker, of als nummer 4 van de competitie (nummer 3 Ajax krijgt het eerste ticket, ik de tweede omdat PSV de beker won)?

Is dit een fout die nog niet verholpen is? Of ben ik niet goed bekend met de regels over deze play-offs?
Dit is het eerste seizoen, dus Nederland heeft gewoon 3 Europa League tickets.

Thanks for offering this site and a wealth of automotive knowledge. I will intently read and learn from this vast pool of experienced motorists and perhaps be able to add to it. Our car is a very well cared for and maintained Turbo Diesel. Although it has 125,000 miles , you would never assume so by its outward appearance or drive ability. And , I am totally un accustomed to driving for nearly a month on one tank of fuel . My wife and I drive school buses, yes we are Sr Citizens, ha, and our car does not see many miles on our daily commute, sometimes not even reaching operating temperature. I've been told this car needs to be driven hard from time to time, for me that is a reversal in motoring mentality that will be a hard fix. I'm not an "old fuddy" behind the wheel but have never redlined any of my vehicles, ever! Trying to get my wife to visit her folks in Buffalo, about 360 miles round trip just to "see what she's got" so to speak. Any spin on "drive it hard"? Also, if anyone has info on what brands of diesel fuel get the best ratings it would be great to log that as well. Thanks for membership, Jim!:flag:

1e on my mind... sell me on neat books I can use with it...

I've been running a BFRPG game for a few months now, and recently decided to dig out all my old AD&D 1e books to add some content to the game. Now I'm thinking about starting up an AD&D 1e game later this summer with some pals.

Because of that, I splurged and picked up a ton of second-party OSR books during Lulu's last sale. Now I'm wondering if there are any other great books out there I should know about, and consider picking up at some point. Here's what I just got:

The library in the last city I lived in had this really cool old Wargaming/Rpg book. The cover had a wizard and this little demon thing on it. The rules seemed rather Byzantine from what I recall and covered both roleplaying and wargaming.

Anyone have any idea what the game in question might be? I have a mind to track down a copy.

TDI scan gauge issues

Not sure if any TDI folks can weigh in or have and idea but I thought I'd post it here. My problem is nonrandom appearance of 9999 mpg on scan gauge when accelerating. I think it's preventing me from learning the best way to drive.

I definitely get the 9999 when coasting in gear, which makes sense as the fuel flow is shut off. This other 9999 happens sporadically during acceleration (including the pulse in my pulse and glide). I think it's the scan-gauge's way of correcting for the calibration factor I have put in, or just a glitch with the way it monitors TDI. It seems to only occur when pulsing or otherwise accelerating at a decent load, however. I've noticed if I do a slow, careful pulse, taking a long time to get up to speed, that it won't do it. It also doesn't seem to do it just driving in a steady state. Obviously the problem it makes for me is that I dont' feel I can accurately judge whether a brisker pulse is better for fuel economy than a slower pulse, since it seems the more aggressive pulses give artificially inflated overall fuel economy numbers as a decent chunk of the pulse is eaten up with a "9999".

Right now I'm trying more like the gentler pulses I've seen recommended for TDIs here (70-80 LOD reading goal), and my scan gauge numbers look worse (when comparing same 15 mile trips), BUT if I look at overall how fast the fuel gauge is falling, it looks better than the old way! No matter what of course the actual fuel used is what matters most, but its a little harder to do tank to tank comparisons and be sure that the pulses were what made the difference, than it is to do "on the fly" shorter time frame comparisons using scan gauge.

I'd worry similarly that if I tried to compare a steady state, driving with load kind of deal (which some seem to think is as good or better for the TDI than P and G), the pulse and glide would look artificially better given the 9999's during pulses... I think based on tank to tank comparisons that P and G does better for my commutes, but it'd be nice to be able to judge on the fly, and I dont' feel I can do that with this glitch/correction/whatever it is...

Any ideas on how to address? It might just be a fundamental flaw with TDI and the correction factor, in which case, too bad. Its still useful for judging steady state mpg per mph etc...

It was always my impression that the game was designed with large groups in mind. Core mechanics like the auction seem to rely on there being quite a number of participants. Otherwise there's not much bidding and you could wind up with just one or two ranks per attribute. This in turn leaves little space for secret ranks (which I find rather essential with randomness removed), when you obviously either outclass everyone in a given area or compete with just one other player. Makes advancement problematic too.

The sample auction in the book involves eight players, which I would say is a lot. Throughout two decades of gaming I've only played a few sessions with so many participants, and those were exclusively convention one shots. My last game of Amber had five players, and I don't suppose it would work well with less than four. However, in most other systems I limit participation to three or four at most, seeing it as optimum groups size.

Did you try running Amber for groups of three or less players?

If so, how did it go? How did you handle attribute auction? Wasn't the game too predictable with low number of ranks?

[Cycling League] Garmin - Sharp


Gezien het feit dat @Kelvin; momenteel al het werk doet voor een mooie Cycling League, vind ik dat het tijd wordt dat ik er ook wat moeite in ga stoppen. Ik had dit hele verhaal een tijdje terug al getypt en gedaan, maar kon hem nog niet eerder samenvoegen/uploaden doordat ik Photoshop maar niet aan de praat kreeg. Uiteindelijk met het tweederangsprogramma GIMP de bende maar geupload. ;c Excuus voor het feit dat het plaatje wat smal en moeilijk te lezen is. In dit topic zal ik proberen wat mooie updates te maken van hoe Garmin - Sharp er voor staat in de MU Cycling League. Uiteraard zou het tof zijn als andere mensen dit ook zouden doen. :)

Do you think a rule mechanic of 2d12 + is too swingy with lower skill ratings when used in a "versus" (i.e. a contested) roll?

For example, with a 2d12 +1 roll against a 2d12 +2 roll, there seems to be too much weight given to the 2d12 variables. In other words, that +1, +2, +3 modifier doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

As the characters improve, they'll have skill ratings up toward +16, but at the lower end (specifically from around the +1 to +4 range), it feels too swingy.

It could be argued that that's how it should be at lower skill ratings; that you are chancing more or less to luck to get you through the day. I'm not convinced though.

Cryptworld Monsters Macabre Kickstarter

Looks like we've got more monsters, more unsettling powers, optional rules, and more to support this great game.

I used to just brainstorm, but that article helped me to focus my brainstorming.

I've been kinda blocked for adventure writing lately. (I don't have a group at the moment, I'm just keeping my hand in) And I sometimes go google image searching for inspiration.
I went through every image in my inspiration folder, and typed out a very quick, less than a sentence impression of each image. Like "Dragon runes" or "The party splits up". Whatever bubbled into my head. I then numbered them all (came out to 170something adventure elements) and proceeded to RNG 5 elements, and then a further group of 5 in case I needed elaboration or alternates. It came out rather well, and got me writing a scenario quickly.

A lot of the GM Advice I've been reading, and my own recent play experience, have led me to the conclusion that going after the players (not in a bad or hostile way, but making the person/environment opposition active and very challenging/harrying) produces much more satisfying sessions (with the end result being that players still get to be awesome and achieve their goals).

I'm currently running V20 in a Dark Ages setting, but I run lots of other stuff too.

What things have you done or do you keep in mind to "harry" the players and get this satisfying effect?

Training

In de voorbereiding zwaar op tactiek trainen en op teamwork. Als je ploeg (bijna) volledig het systeem onder de knie heeft, moet je bij de wedstrijdvoorbereiding overschakelen naar aanvallende impulsen. Rust voor de wedstrijd staat trouwens uit, rust na de wedstrijd aan. Tijdens het seizoen moet het hoofdaccent gebalanceerd zijn met een gemiddelde intensiteit.

Modern DA: Fae (and possibly coexisting with C:tD)

Has anyone ran a modern era DA: Fae game here and is it possible? Of course I've been wondering how the Fae in the modern era can perfectly function in the modern era without any problems and plus I hope there is future supplements about porting DA: Fae in the modern era.

Plus another idea I've had is that about the possibility of DA: Fae and C:tD coexisting in the same setting and present them as separate supernaturals without no links to each other? Or if there is "links" I think the closest one I can think of where it doesn't disturb the DA: Fae portion is that what if Dreaming Changelings are 'sprites' that put into human souls or something similar to how insects put eggs in other insects which the larvae grow and burst inside them which is how I envision Dreaming Changelings to be. Or maybe it's best to present them as entirely different Supernaturals somehow which DA: Fae are actual Fae while Changelings are just manifestations of born from human dreams. Perhaps for example a Sidhe meeting a Firstborn face to face which is a clear example.

So any ideas?

Good font for a samurai game?

I have my game (Bushi D6 - see sig). I was wondering if there were some good fonts for such a game? I know they exist, based upon similar rpg's, but I don't know what they would be called.

Mainly want it for the title and maybe chapter headers. Regular text will probably be TNR or something similar, unless there is a very readable font for regular text (which I doubt).

Bekendmaking 1e en 2e plaatsen groepsfase

Bij deze de bekendmaking welke deelnemers er door zijn in de poules. Ik ga zometeen de loting bekendmaken voor de KO's.

Aangezien niet alle wedstrijden gespeeld zijn in veel poules, is het nogal een klus voor de organisatie om te bepalen welke deelnemers er uiteindelijk doorgaan in iedere poule. Dit betreft lastige beslissingen, maar we zoeken oprecht naar de meest faire oplossing in bepaalde poules. Wij hopen dan ook als organisatie, dat, mocht de beslissing niet in iemands voordeel uitvallen, deze begrip kan opbrengen voor onze keuze en de situatie in de poule.

Mochten er wedstrijden geschrapt zijn in een poule, wordt dat uiteraard gemeld.

A Publisher for Dark Albion? Plus: The True History of Frog Men and the Paris Swamp!

So for the first time in a while there's been some interesting news regarding the possibility of some kind of publication of quality being made out of my awesome homebrew campaign, Dark Albion. As you can see if you click the link, you can already get a ton of info for this setting for free, on the thread dedicated to it. But I have quite a bit of extra material that is not out there, and that plus a professional look plus a hopefully affordable PDF or PoD would I think make Albion a really great addition to the stable of OSR fantasy settings. While I have run the Albion campaign for LotFP, I would make any actual book system-neutral for use with any OSR-type game.

The news, in any case, that after a long period of languishing, the author of the Fantastic Heroes & Witchery RPG, a fairly gonzo-sided OSR game, is looking to make Dark Albion happen. He's even made a few same mock-ups of what a cover might look like, which you can see on the Albion thread.

The irony is that "Albion" may end up being published by a Frenchman. Have the English lost all their pride? Some might actually ask if the French have, mind you, given how the Albion setting portrays the area we'd know as France as "Frogland", ruled by vicious and evil chaos-worshiping Frogmen!

Strangely enough, this hasn't really seemed to bother most French fans of the setting. Whereas the Scottish consistently get worked up about how they're kilted barbarians. I guess we see which of the two have the better sense of humour.

Keep in mind that much of Albion is not just a fantasy but a fantasy based on popular perceptions of the English; so Ireland is a kingdom of barbarians and faeries, Scots Land a frigid land of kilted brutes, and France of course is literal Frog-men. While England itself is a classist land of serf-oppression and corrupt feuding power-mad aristocracy.

Over the course of the campaign "Frogland" has been somewhat developed and elaborated upon; for example, it became clear that the Frogmen are only the inhuman minority who rule over a Frankish human majority that are treated like slaves. Their chief territory is Paris. They govern through the help of their advanced (chaos) magick and human collaborators.

(the "Paris Swamp", a term which apparently has confused some of the French fans, is a play on "Lutetia", which in Latin means "city of swamps or mud")

But before the Frogmen emerged from the Paris Swamp and conquered most of those lands, there were human kingdoms there, of Frankmen, some of whom were ancestors to the Anglish Kings by marriage (hence their claim of rule over Frogland and their constant wars with them these past 150 years). The lands of Burgundy, and Burgundy's vassal Lorraine, are still ruled by humans. And later in the timeline of the campaign, the lands of Brittany rise up in human rebellion against the Frog overlords, and with the help of Albion and Burgundy gain their freedom (or rather, they did in my campaign; in yours things might go much worse).

As to the Frogmen's origin, I would hearken them back to ancient times, before humans dominated the world. We know from Albion's prehistory that when humans were created as slaves for the ancient Elves, it was the Elves and the Dragons who ruled over most of the world, the two not always friendly with each other. I would like to think that things like lizardmen and frogmen were created by Dragons in the Dragons' image, to act as slaves and ground troops to oppose the humans and goblinkind that the Elves had created.

You'll note that in The Wash, Albion's own swamps, there are also Frogmen, who are primitive and degenerate, rather than the sophisticated variety that rule Frogland. They were probably left over there from the time of the Dragons.

Anyhow, even if it will take a Frenchman to make Albion a reality, I'm excited by the prospect.

Mage: the Ascension and Social Justice Warriors

So I've seen some discussion on some other forums about the new Mage 20th Anniversary edition that's recently come out. I don't have have it and may not buy it, based in part this SJW stuff.

What I hear is that there are a lot of Social Justice Warrior nonsense spread through out the books, comments and sidebars here and there, plus some pretty extreme anti-white racism from some of the (possibly writer's voice) splats. Now I haven't seen any of this first hand, has anybody else here read or heard of this from the new Mage book and have any comments on it? Like I said, there is some discussion on other RPG forums, but as you might expect, only one side is allowed to be expressed in some of these places, so I though people here might have a bit more to offer.

Wheel size and alloy vs steel?

I'm a little confused on what is better for mpg gains on a car. I know for example, the 2015 Toyota Corolla LE ECO, comes standard with 15" steel wheels and claims 42 mpg. The LE ECO plus, which comes with 16-in. aerodynamically designed alloy wheels, only nets 40 mpg. The only other difference is fog lights. Total weight difference between the cars is 20 lbs.

On my car, the 15 Corolla LE (non-eco), it has 16" steel wheels. Out of curiosity, would it benefit more from 15" steel, or 16" alloy?

Team Meetings

Ik vraag me af, hoe jullie omgaan met verschillende reacties bij een team meeting. In een ideale situatie is het hele team het met je mededelingen eens, en gaat het team er in motivatie op vooruit, maar het gebeurt ook regelmatig dat er verschillende geluiden uit de spelersgroep komen, de helft is het eens, de helft is het oneens. Wat zijn in zo'n geval de beste keuzes, want ik krijg het steeds maar weer voor elkaar dat in zo'n situatie uiteindelijk het hele team in motivatie achteruit gaat... :(

2d6 v 3d6 v 1d20: Which is Aesthetically pleasing?

This seems to be an age old debate. Which is better? Xd6 vs 1d20? Probabilities seem to dominate this discussion and it's fair enough. I'd say the biggest advantages are how the probabilities of both options affect the system math. But I wanted to look at it from an aesthetics perspective. I realise this is completely subjective and everyone will speak from their own personal biases and that's fine because I want to hear the reasons. I'm working on a ruleset and I am completely torn on the issue and don't know which way to side to land on.

So which do you find more aesthetically pleasing? Have all rolls be a 1 or more d6 or have multiple dice types with the primary dice being 1d20.

Advantages of Polyhedral Dice
* All D&D fans (and fans of d20 derivatives) are more likely to give your game a chance.
* You can get more granularity with weapon damage rolls as they'll always be some multiple of polyhedral dice. E.g. With polyhedral dice one attack can hit 3 targets for 1d6 each (average is 10.5) while another attack can hit a single target for 2d10 total (average is 11).

Disadvantages of Polyhedral Dice
* Those gamers who hate d20 and refuse to play any games with it won't play your game.
* With new gamers I have seen it time and time again. They take a good session or two to learn which roll uses which dice and if they only play once a month it can take up to 6 months for them to learn it.
* Dice are more expensive for new gamers (which is why attacks that require lots of dice almost always require d6).

Advantages of Using d6s
* Those gamers who hate d20 are more likely to give your game a chance.
* A certain percentage of D&D gamers will be willing to play your game.
* Everyone (including D&D gamers) has some d6s lying around. If they don't it is significantly cheaper to buy a box of them vs enough polyhedral dice that you can always roll them at one time.
* Newbies will always know which type of dice to roll.

Disadvantages of Using d6s
* Those D&D gamers who refuse to play anything that isn't d20 based won't play your game.
* You're limited to damage rolls being separated by intervals of 1d6. You can have a modifier to the damage roll, but is that aesthetically pleasing?

So what do people think? Is it aesthetically pleasing?

Talking a little about the probabilities. I'll get to damage rolls in another post as I want to run some numbers first. But with skill checks this is where 3d6 may shine.

Why is the lowest DC at DC 5 and then all subsequent categories add +5 to the DC? Because as a GM it's easier for me to remember that the number is going to be around 15 vs 22 or 23. As people we tend to find it easier to jump ahead by lots of 5. I've seen this in D&D 4th edition, Pathfinder and D&D 5th edition. Multiples of 5 are always easier for DMs (IMO).

So in this scenario 2d6 and 1d20 have the same bonuses, although in 2d6 you're 7.78% less likely to succeed. In a d20 game -1 to a skill check isn't really seen as that big a deal and that's how I'm seeing the difference.

The 3d6 roll is the least aesthetically pleasing because it's not in multiples of 5.

The biggest problem I have with the 1d20 roll is that an Epic roll which is intended to represent the highest hardest thing possible, can be achieved by a mere expert 55% of the time. An expert is meant to be good, but not THAt good. A way around this is to increase the Epic DC to 35 and give an epic person the ability to roll 2d20 and take the best result. According to google this takes the person with a +25 bonus to the check from succeeding 55% of the time to 80% of the time. Mathematically it achieves EXACTLY by reducing the expert to a mere 5% chance of success. However we've skipped DC 30 as being a category and introduced a new mechanic (roll 2d20 and take the best) that has to be given to the player somehow. That decreases the aesthetic beauty of the 1d20 roll.

If we look at 2d6 then an expert cannot ever reach the DC 30 epic roll. This firmly places the expert as the pinnacle of mundane human achievement (Heroic tier in D&D 4th ed terminology) while it gives the Epic character a 72.22% chance of success without needing to introduce any special mechancis or increasing the DC by +10 instead of +5.

To be perfectly honest I'm inclined to abandon the d20 mechanic in favour of a 2d6 mechanic. However I'm hesitant simply because d20 is such a well known brand and unifying identity. All d20 games share a lot in common amongst their fans.

What do people think? Are there reasons for going with Xd6 over polyhedral dice that I haven't considered? Are there even more reasons to want to abandon polyhedral dice in favour of d6 that I haven't considered? Which do you find most aesthetically pleasing and why?
