Known by many names, inflatables are large inflatable structures that provide a cushioned surface to walk, jump and play on. Amusement parks regularly have them but manufacturers produce smaller versions for home use. If there's a party coming up and you're strapped for ideas just rent an inflatable or two and watch kids have a ball.
Reputable makers do their best to comply with safety guidelines since there have been cases of children falling and hurting themselves, sometimes even fatally. As an adult, you have the responsibility of choosing inflatables that meet certain expectations.
Safety
This is the first factor to examine. Materials must be ASTM-certified which includes being durable enough not to tear or break. Adult supervision is always required when inflatables are used but accidents can happen so you must make sure the product is safe.
Safety features such as nets should be fitted to catch children who fall. Ideally, the product shouldn't have too many small components that can tear and be accidentally consumed so choose an inflatable that features large parts, sturdy nets and any additional safety feature.
Stability
Once inside, children will jump and play a lot and it's important that the product doesn't move or shake too much. Heavier inflatables are more stable and have a less chance of toppling over. The only way to check is to get inside and do what kids do as well as compare weight. Don't go by face value alone.
Quality/durability
Inflatables are not very cheap, whether bought or rented. Therefore, they must be able to take abuse well. Heavier products last longer and are not easily subject to tears. Of course, the reputation of the maker also matters because well-known manufacturers will always produce products that can endure wear and tear well.
Size
Large inflatables are best suited for outdoor areas especially if used by many children. However, you'll still have to monitor the number of kids inside to prevent suffocation and jams. Rent two if you expect more than a dozen kids and make sure they don't overcrowd them.
Size apart, the blower should be able to output sufficient airflow so choose one with a higher horsepower.
Manufacturer's and rental's reputation
If you're purchasing, choose a manufacturer that's been producing inflatables for years. It would have amassed plenty of product knowledge and applied it to products using the latest technology and the best materials while complying with safety standards.
If you're renting, look for a vendor that's been in the business for at least five years. Check the feedback of past customers and look out for complaints. The vendor should also have several products at its disposal so you can find one that meets your requirements.
Inflatables can be the best entertainment for children if they provide a safe environment. But like any inflatable product they do carry risks which is why it's up to you to decide what's safe. Shop around, stick with the tips given above and you should be able to find a couple that perfectly matches your expectations and that of your children.
