So just out of curiosity as players how do you feel about new character races supplanting dwarves, elves, and the like?
I'm working on a setting at the moment, a post apocalyptic science weird fantasy thing. A scouting expedition from a multiverse spanning empire gets trapped in a pocket reality at the edges of all known space and time, a war ensues between them and the natives, things go nuclear and weapons are used that are so horrific they alter the fabric of reality itself killing the gods and causing the very nightmares of the combatants to come to life. The setting itself is about a millennium after all this.
Originally I had pictured this invaded universe to be a fairly standard fantasy type place. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings etc. However the more I think about it the more I don't think it is actually how things are, I am thinking of replacing the stock demi-human sorts, or at least one type of them, with a custom race.
My problem with this is that I wonder if deviating outside the typical fantasy troupes even more than I already plan to will drive players away. It seems like many players aren't willing to screw with something that is to different from the norm.
Is it better to leave the expectations of standard fantasy races alone?
