I have 49K miles on my 2010 Prius and done nothing other than change the oil twice a year and fill with gas. Well while pursuing another car board someone inquired about using a fuel system cleaner and do they work? You got the usual positive and negative replies and most said they worked and of course four or five of their favorites were mentioned.
I've used them in past (Techron) but with the quality gasoline's we have today never thought about using any of these products in the last five or more years.
I stopped at Advance Auto and saw they had Techron on sale for less than $6 a bottle, enough to treat 12 gallons. I grabbed three, one for the Prius and two for the Volvo.
I needed gas earlier in the week so I tossed a bottle in the Prius and forgot all about it until today. No change, used the same Sunoco station by my house where I get most of my gas filling up with E10 87. I've seen a drop in mileage but speculated that it was mostly due to the change over to E10 gas in the area.
I had put on 250 miles, a little less than half a tank mostly highway. I never saw any increase in mileage during the highway runs due to it being in the first two days since filling up. The HSI display is still showing around 58 mpg for this tank since I normally lock the cruise control at 55 mph on the highway.
Today I went to work (A mile and half) and had to run a few quick errands in the afternoon. While on my way back to work I just happened to look up at my Scan Gauge.
I just sat at the traffic light staring at the display thinking something was wrong. These errands were all short trips, low speed 25-35 mph no more than three to four miles round trip. The SG was showing 51.8 mpg on the display for today. Normally I would expect to see mid forties maybe 47-48 mpg at best making these same short trips with the hills and many stops. Even the trip from home to work is never more than 35 mpg because of the engine warm up cycle. Which is still much better than the eight to nine mpg I would see in the Volvo.
The Prius drives and feels the same, no change other than my fuel mileage around town has jumped. I can't tell you if the Techron improved the engine performance since it is a Prius and I drive like a little old lady. :) I might have had some injector spray issues (49K miles) that the Techron cleaned up, thus the jump in mileage around town.
If you're seeing a slight decrease in fuel mileage and can't figure out why, think about running a bottle of Techron with your next tank of gas. Due to the cost / benefit aspect of using it, I think once a year is plenty with the quality of the gas we have today.

Looks like I might have found a product that improved my fuel mileage.
