Geneva will experience the World Premiere of the 2016 VW Golf GTD.

Since 1982 Volkswagen's GTD logo has stood for “Gran Turismo Diesel” providing a powerful yet efficient hot hatch. For the first time, the GTD initials describe a new Golf Variant with a 181 HP and 280 lb-ft. of torque 2.0L TDI I4 engine.

The Golf GTD trim is a long-distance cruiser capable of reaching 60 in just 7.8 seconds. The 181 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque TDI engine takes the Golf GTD Variant to 60 mph in just 7.8 seconds yet is rated at 53.4 mpgUS combined on the NEDC. Maybe 35 mpgUS combined on our own EPA?

The car's exterior includes GTD bumpers and a honeycomb radiator grille, smoked rear lights and flared sills, 17-inch alloys, black roof rails and dual chrome tailpipes. Also standard are bi-xenon headlamps, sports suspension with ride height lowered by 0.6 in, and progressive steering, which gives a sharper response during high-performance driving as well as ensuring greater comfort in ordinary conditions. Oh how I would like that 0.6” lower ride height applied to the standard Golf TDI. ;)

Inside, sports seats, illuminated sills, black headliner and pillar, decorative inserts and panels in Checkered Black, plus stainless steel pedal caps. The multi-function steering wheel with aluminum trim is a highlight but the shift knob golf ball is over the top cool!!! Sorry I do not have any interior pics. :(

The Golf GTD will be available with 18-inch alloys and seat covers in a choice of Alcantara or Vienna leather. For an additional $1,092, there is the Sports and Design package featuring driving mode selection, the same 18-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and tinted windows.

How much you want to bet that despite the increased HP, the Golf GTD is just as efficient as the base 150 hp 2.0L EA288 TDI we have available in the Golf, Jetta and Passat here today? Depending on its tires, final and 6th ratios of course. ;)
