According to Ford, the Fiesta has become the UKs best-selling model of all time when its total sales passed 4,115,000 over a period of 37 years from its introduction back on 1976.
The Fiesta has led the small car segment in the UK for 27 of the 37 years and has been Britains best-selling car since 2009 when it overtook Fords other popular small car, the Focus.
This month it surpassed the historic record of the Ford Escort which sold 4,105,961 in the 32 years it was on sale in the UK from 1968 through to 2000.
UK-based engineers at Fords R&D Center at Dunton, in Essex, and at Fords Dagenham Diesel Center, in East London, develop all powertrains for the Fiesta. Dunton Technical Center is home to Fords EcoBoost including the 1.0L. The 1.6L EcoBoost that powers the Fiesta ST is manufactured at the Bridgend Engine Plant, South Wales.
Dagenham Diesel Center specializes in the engineering and production of high-tech turbo diesel engines for most of Fords line-up of cars and commercial vehicles across Europe including the new 1.5L TDCi diesel for the Fiesta.
On the emissions front, it would take more than 80 modern-day Fiestas to generate the NOx emissions of a single 1976 Mk1 model. This first-generation Fiesta, with the 46 HP .95L I4 weighed around 1,760 pounds and achieved 31.4 mpgUS combined on the NEDC. Todays fully-equipped model, with the 1.6L TDCi Econectic turbo diesel engine, weighs nearly 2440 pounds yet is rated with combined fuel economy of 71.3 mpgUS. Also on the NEDC.
