2015 Hyundai Sonata is more car than the sum of its parts. Here is another one of its excellent upcoming features.
Los Angeles, California -- From the U.S.’ largest car buying market, the LA Auto Show has a history going back more than 100 years. Since its first car displays in 1907, the show has grown to one of the best-attended auto shows in the world.
Press Days draws more than 4,000 media from more than 50 countries.
In conjunction with Press days, the LA Auto Show created a startup of its own called Connected Car Expo (CCE). CCE is a three-day trade show and symposium that brings together technology and the automobile with advanced presentations from the industry’s leading experts on the future of the car and all that it entails.
This is where Hyundai’s BlueLink and Apple CarPlay comes together.
Apple CarPlay in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata
One of Hyundai’s key automobile design philosophies is safety of occupants within their automobiles. Along with accident avoidance (active) and crash test (passive) safety, Hyundai is currently leading the way with limited distraction infotainment solutions within its BlueLink system.
Hyundai will soon bring Apple CarPlay functionality into the 2015 Sonata. CarPlay is a smarter, safer and easier way to use some of the iPhones functionality in the car while allowing all of us to stay focused on the road.
Within the marques main show floor space and within the CCE demonstration space, Hyundai had a number of new 2015 Sonata’s with the latest near production ready Apple CarPlay system live with Apple engineers on hand demoing the latest capability. What was learned is that the simplest automobile infotainment solutions arrives from smartphones controlled by a well know and simple graphical interface and voice command. In the case of Hyundai’s BlueLink with Apple CarPlay, a standard iPhone user’s interface and a welcoming voice named Siri handles the tasks at hand.
Hyundai’s latest Audio Video Navigation (AVN) systems have been recognized for their easy to use intuitive interfaces to control an array the very latest in infotainment solutions from maps to music plus much much more.
The 2015 Hyundai Sonata with its large hi-res 8” touchscreen and CarPlay brings the iPhone experience to center stage within the Sonata itself.
CarPlay, lets drivers make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages using Siri to keep your eyes on the road. Using a Lighting connector, CarPlay works with iPhone 6 +, 6, 5s, 5c and iPhone 5 running the latest version of iOS.
By integrating CarPlay into the Sonata, Hyundai is one of the first volume manufacturers to bring CarPlay to market and it will be available on 2015 Sonatas equipped with navigation later in the 2015 model year.
2015 Hyundai Sonata ECO
At $24,210 to start incl. mats, D&H, a $2k off rebate right now, a passenger volume larger than the Impala and Avalon, a 28/38 mpgUS city/highway rating and both BlueLink and Apple’s CarPlay leading the automotive industry’s infotainment direction, do not dismiss it.
Hyundai and Apple CarPlay Early Conclusions
So what did I think? No infotainment is the best solution but that train has already left the station with the advent of the AM radio placed into a 1922 Chevrolet. A poll conducted in 1934 found that 56 percent deemed the car radio a “dangerous distraction.” Little did they know…
Apple is limiting distraction through its CarPlay and Siri. While not perfect, it is about the best available today. Seeing it live, I am naming Apple CarPlay the 2014 LA Auto Show “Best New Automobile Feature.” Seeing any number of FCV, PHEV, and performance oriented car releases from around the globe, who would have thought some high end SW coding on an 8” hi-res touchscreen display would have caught my eye? Really glad I spent some time with the Hyundai folks and the Apple HW engineers on hand providing the press live demonstrations.
