Jeff Perren could use our help

Reposted from Benoist:

To all our gaming friends: Jeff Perren, the co-author with Gary Gygax of the Chainmail miniatures war game in 1971 (which would spawn, a few years later, the Dungeons & Dragons game), needs our help.

His leg amputated, he now lives away from his family, in a nursing home, and you know how hard it can be on one's morale. Now his daughter, Victoria Ricks Perren-Cserep, has a plan to get him to live in her house, but since he is wheelchair-bound, this means making the house accessible, and this means a stair lift to start and make this workable.

This could mean a big change for Jeff Perren, and that would help greatly in all sorts of ways, psychologically, physically, you name it. Feeling good surrounded by your loved ones goes a long way towards living a good life. So please, consider pitching in, even a buck or two. Any amount matters.

Please also share the link so a maximum of gamers get to know about this.

Let's make it happen for Jeff. Thank you very much, friends!

Bosch Gets Serious About eBikes With New North American HQ

Europe’s eBike technology leader and its new North American facility.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 31, 2015

Bosch at Interbike last year.

Just a year after entering the U.S. eBike market, Bosch has established a new 4,000 sq. ft. office facility for Bosch eBike Systems in Irvine, California. The new office will manage sales, marketing, advocacy, application and technical support, service, project management, and quality management.

The new HQ will help Bosch eBike Systems support the growing number of bicycle brands launching pedal-assist eBikes with Bosch systems in the U.S. and Canada.

Some of the current users of the Bosch eBike drivetrain include BH EasyMotion, Felt Bicycles, Grace, Haibike, KTM, Lapierre and Xtracycle. Bosch-equipped eBikes will be available in 2015 on a wide variety of urban commuter, trekking, mountain, fat-tire, and cargo bikes.

In a prepared statement, Bosch is expecting eBikes equipped with its technology to have a big year in 2015 as more brands begin to offer eBikes with its technology.

Bosch’s eBike System, when mounted on a bicycle, has the power to flatten hills and shrink cities. It does this by boosting a cyclist’s human power with electric power at speeds up to 20 mph. The key components of the system are the PowerPack and Drive Unit, with a Li-ion battery, motor, and sensor technology from Bosch’s Automotive and Power Tools businesses. The end-result is the cyclist feels they are being pushed up the road by a tailwind as they pedal − great for outdoor adventurists and urban commuters alike.

Performance Line Drive Unit Overview - Cruise at 15 mph and peak at 28 mph

The Bosche Performance eBike pacakge.

The Drive Unit of the Performance Line provides a noticeable acceleration boost and is designed for dynamic eBike riding on any terrain.

The Drive Unit of the Performance Line is equipped with three sensors for pedal power, cadence, and speed with 1000 sensor measurements per second. This gives you dynamic and direct support over your entire speed range.

When the maximum speed is reached, the motor powers down automatically.

While you are shifting, the drive adapts its torque to the shifting process reducing strain on the components, cuts down on wear, and makes the shifting process more seamless than ever before.

Bosch eBike drive systems are designed for low eight and maximum power output. The compact gear arrangement allows for optimal integration of the Drive Unit into the frame to maintain the bikes standard ground clearance.

Due to the precise motor control and the rapid sensor signal processing, the Drive Unit produces minimal noise and vibration. The semi-enclosed chain helps to keep it engaged and protected from the elements.

The opening of the new eBike HQs marks another step in Bosch’s continued expansion in California. Currently Bosch employs over 500 associates in 10 facilities across the state that are active in R&D (Palo Alto) and a variety of businesses including automotive aftermarket (Fountain Valley, Ontario, Santa Barbara), drive and controls (Pleasanton), healthcare (Palo Alto), home appliances (Irvine), power tools (Anaheim), security systems (Ontario) and thermos-technology (Irvine).

I pass Irvine on every trip to Southern California so it looks like I will have to stop in for more detail the next time I am through. My oldest son is a huge fan of the eBike due in part to his 7 mile commute on a std. mountain bike with up to 400’ elevation deltas.

Continental’s all-new Conti.eContact Tire

Low rolling resistance with excellent wet traction ratings.

http://ift.tt/1AbxcZL

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 31, 2015

The Conti.eContact available in versions for electric cars and hybrids in Europe today.

Continental has two tires that are specially designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrids (HEVs). Both are called Conti.eContacts and each was designed for a specific drivetrain. The 20-inch Conti.eContact for BEVs delivers rolling resistance that is approximately 30 percent lower than a conventional tire. The 17 and 18-inch Conti.eContact for HEVs was designed to achieve a reduction in rolling resistance of at least 20 percent was designed for standard cars and SUVs.

Like the Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Tech we used during the 48-State Guinness World Record, the eContacts deliver good traction on both wet and dry roads.

Continental can now supply manufacturers of BEVs with tires that can extend the range of their models by up to six percent. And thanks to its reduced rolling resistance, the Conti.eContact for hybrids enables these cars to improve fuel efficiency and cover further distances. Tires from the Conti.eContact series have already won approvals from VW and Renault, and Continental is expecting further OEMs from German and European automakers in the near future.

The Conti.eContact for BEVs use the “tall and narrow” concept. At 20 inches, these tires have a very large diameter and narrow tread width to reduce the aero drag internet in a tire with a larger frontal area and less flex. These 10” tires as seen on the i3 provided a marked reduction in rolling resistance.

With its 17 and 18-inch tires, the Conti.eContact is a conventional tire size but with 20 percent less rolling resistance. These Conti.eContact tires are the first Continental tire to earn a ‘A’ rating on the EU Tire Label for both rolling resistance and wet braking. Continental manufactures both of these tires in limited series at its French plant in Sarreguemines.

[nWoD/GMC] Has anyone every played an all-Minor Templates game?

I'm guessing for the most part the Minor Templates (Wolf-Blooded, Ghouls, Proximii, Enchanted Mortals, etc) see very little play outside NPCs. I've been playing them alongside the Major Templates (XP-adjusted to compensate for the lack of powers), but I've always thought there's an interesting premise to be had with a whole group of them.

There's broadly two options; they could all be the same type, where you'd effectively be playing a different level of focus in the same game. Perhaps they're a specialist team of fixers employed by the Major Template to handling things more subtly than sending in the Majors. For example it might be The Day Shift, an elite Ghoul kill-team who clean up threats the vampires can't get to during the day, beneath the noses of the authorities.

Alternatively, in a mixed group you have the option of taking Minor Templates from any of the lines, so you might have a Ghoul, a Wolf-Blooded and a couple of Proximii teaming up. That would seem to lend itself more towards either a Hunter-style game, or else something more mortal-focused, where the PCs are a cut above regular people by dint of their supernatural connection.

In either instance you'd give them bonus Experiences to start with (15-40 depending on how much extra juice is desired), so that they can get some real differentiation and start out competent enough to do more than milk runs.

Sound interesting? Has anyone done something like this?

[FM15] Valencia CF

Volgende update; Eerste 10 competitiewedstrijd(+ eventueel beker)

Role-Playing in Middle-earth

Anyone ever run a long campaign in Middle-earth? My group really wants to run a campaign there. When I was in high school we played MERP a whole lot but I was never a big fan of how MERP handled the world. I loved the product but when it comes to simulating the feel of Middl-earth I found it wanting.

Has anybody played the Decipher system or the One Right RPG system? From reading online it seems that the One Ring RPG is very abstract when it comes to simulating the world of Middle-earth.

The Decipher system I ignored when it was released because I thought it was based on the movie.

Nissan’s “With Dad” for the Superbowl

Just a clip but expect a lot more “Cool” on Sunday.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 30, 2015

With Dad

Nissan teased its Super Bowl advert through a social media campaign using YouTube videos and the hashtag #withdad including a short preview of the spot as shown.

Nissan previously announced it would feature a 60-second spot in the Super Bowl. The company has increased its stake in the game to a 90-second ad, which it says will tell a unique family story while maintaining a strong Nissan brand connection.

Nissan released the first 10 seconds of its commercial, which depicts a couple having a baby and images of the dad working as a race car driver mixed to a soundtrack of Harry Chapin's iconic song, "Cat's In the Cradle."

Fred Diaz, senior VP, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations for Nissan North America: "We think we've captured and told a touching story about a family's struggles with work-life balance in our 90 seconds during the game. You'll also see two surprise products that will make cameo appearances in the full story on Sunday."

While many advertisers release their commercials on YouTube in the weeks before the game, Nissan is keeping its full ad quiet until the Super Bowl XLIX this Sunday.

Nissan is encouraging those interested in learning more to go to With Dad.

Not sure about you but I love Cat's in the Cradle and cannot wait to see how Nissan finishes this vid off. With the new Marketing Lead coming from Pepsi just 6-months ago, I am expecting big things.

Shell and Hyundai Announce Shell Lubricants Global Partnership

Hyundai dealerships will continue to offer Shell lubricants for after sales maintenance.

http://ift.tt/1BB25SM

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 30, 2015

Mr. Roger Moulding, VP of Shell Global Marketing and Key Accounts, and Mr. Tak Uk Im, Exec VP and COO of Hyundai signed a global business cooperation agreement at Hyundai's global HQ in Seoul, Korea earlier today.

Two of my favorite automotive car brands partner through a five-year deal on a global scale.

Hyundai has just established a new five-year global business cooperation agreement with Shell. The agreement means that Shell retains its status as an officially recommended lubricants supplier for Hyundai vehicle worldwide.

The agreement continues Hyundai’s efforts to maintain the highest standards of customer satisfaction for its aftersales products and services. As well as safeguarding the supply of superior-quality lubricants to Hyundai dealers, the two companies will collaborate on future aftersales-related marketing initiatives.

Shell will also work with Hyundai engineers on developing new lubricant formulations and other technical innovations that meet the needs of Hyundai’s expanding range of vehicles. This activity will support the company’s ongoing efforts to maximize product quality and durability, as well as reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Tak Uk Im:

Quote:

“This agreement with Shell supports the needs of our global aftersales supply chain, as well as giving rise to new technical collaborations and joint marketing initiatives. Shell will be a leading partner with us as we implement and enhance our aftersales strategy over the coming years.”

Roger Moulding:

Quote:

“This agreement means we will continue to supply and jointly develop high-quality motor oils for Hyundai customers underpinned by Shell’s technology leadership. By leveraging the strengths of the two global brands, we aspire to offer Hyundai customers the best aftermarket care and service experience.”

Hyundai and Shell are also collaborating on the race track. In 2014 Hyundai Motorsport and Shell became technical partners in the FIA World Rally Championships. In its debut year the Hyundai Shell World Rally Team secured a memorable 1-2 in Rallye Deutschland; scored podiums in three events – Mexico, Poland and Germany; and took 12 stage wins along the way.

Refueling at a Shell just outside of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery.

With 0W-16 weight synthetics being developed for the next generation of automobiles, do you think we'll see some of that in a future Hyundai? Now let’s get some more fuel efficiency involved and they have a hat trick on their hands. ;)

Rocket Age

This is a review of the RPG "Rocket Age", published by Cubicle 7, written by Ken Spencer. It is the print edition (as always) which comes in the form of a hardcover book, 255 pages long, with a full-color cover featuring a pair of spacesuit-wearing adventurers, and decent black-and-white interior art.

Rocket Age is an RPG after my own heart in many ways. One of the list of "games I really like but haven't had as many chances to run as I might hope" is Space:1889. You could easily call Rocket Age "Space: 1938". The similarities were pretty intense to me, but of course I think this wasn't just a case of borrowing from an earlier game as much as it was a case of being inspired by many of the same sources. 1889 was inspired by Victorian Sci-fi; while Rocket Age is inspired by 1930s pulp sci-fi, and yet the two overlap a great deal, and the overall concept is very similar: terran adventurers reaching out to explore and colonize the solar system in an alternate history where easy space-travel was developed at an anachronistically early age. In fact, it would seem to me that if anything Rocket Age takes a lot more of its influence from John Carter of Mars than it does from Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon, although it does have the "Rocket Rangers".

Interestingly, the game is also run using the same system as C7's Doctor Who RPG, which I played some part in developing as one of its more involved playtesters (being, among other things, the guy who convinced the designer to use 2d6, and the inventor of the initiative system; which people think was based on some indie-storytelling concept but was actually inspired by B/X D&D initiative). I would refer you to the earlier (recent) review of the Doctor Who RPG for the basic mechanics of the game, which are identical (from what I can tell) to the rules herein, other than a few innovative shortcuts in character creation, and obviously those specific benefits/drawbacks, and other setting-specific elements (tools, monsters, etc.) that are relevant to each game.

On the whole, I'd have to say that these rules are totally suitable to this kind of game. They're relatively light, fast-moving, and malleable; though I think anyone used to them from playing Doctor Who would inevitably end up getting a sense that they're playing in the setting of some early Doctor story (30s pulp sci-fi not being that far removed from early-60s tv sci-fi)!

The first part of the book is dedicated to detailing the setting, rather than the system (which shows up in the second half). I generally prefer to see it the other way around: give us system first, then setting, but obviously this is a aesthetic choice more than anything. The very first thing the book tells you about is the central setting premise: how in 1931, after years of collaboration, Einstein, Tesla and Goddard successfully constructed a rocket ship capable of flying into space. Einstein and Tesla (along with a young pilot named Ray Armstrong) flew the ship to Mars, where they discovered it was inhabited by an ancient and decadent civilization (think the Carter of Mars stories, or for that matter, Space:1889). By the early 30s, the US, Germany, France and the British were all sending expeditions, soon followed by the Italians and the Japanese. By the time of the setting's start date, 1938, Mars and Venus have both been at least partly colonized by the human great powers, and exploration has charted the Moon, Mercury, the asteroid belt, Jupiter and its moons, and the exploration of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune have begun.

There are alien civilizations on several worlds. On Venus, the aliens there are apelike primitives who live in that world's lush and dangerous jungles. On Mars, the Aliens live in city-states along the canals of this otherwise ecologically poor world; Martian civilization is ancient and the world once flourished but now it is near-dead, with nature only thriving along the canal system. Martian cities and technology were all built in a golden age but the modern-day descendents of this civilization are decadent and have lost much of their knowledge and skill. On Europa (a moon of Jupiter, if you didn't already know) there is a highly advanced super-civilization, clearly more powerful than Earth's and not decadent like the Martians. They seem highly nervous about the human expansion into the solar system, and initially tried to restrict expansion into the outer planets. There are also intelligent races on Ganymede and Io.

Obviously, a great deal of this sounds a lot like Space:1889. The premise for Mars and Venus are pretty well identical. In many ways, I could imagine someone who ran a successful 1889 campaign pulling out Rocket Age and running a 'sequel campaign' with only a few modifications to the setting. But of course, the later setting date also makes some things a bit different; we're not dealing with the Victorian imperial powers here. The Germans aren't the tough but still-sane servants of the Kaiser, they're Nazis, so you get to have them as the bad guys, as they plunder their section of mars and engage in general troublemaking on an interplanetary level. This is quite an improvement in terms of a setting-villain than the 'ruthless Belgians' of space:1889. Plus, if you want more absurdly bumbling fascists, there's even the Italians!

And obviously, both the U.S. and the USSR have a bigger part in this setting. The U.S. has conquered part of Mars and is pretty active in general throughout the solar system, while the Soviets have brought bolshevik revolution to another part of Mars.

The book dedicates a truly excellent amount of setting material to the main planets, more obviously to Venus and especially Mars than the other worlds. This setting material (unlike that of the recently-reviewed Victoriana) feels like it's well organized and like it focuses on what a GM actually needs to run his game (rather than irrelevant trivia) and on adventure hooks/inspirational material. Mercury gets two-and-a-half pages, Venus about 13, the Moon gets one-and-three-quarters (its largely a lifeless rock but with some curious ancient ruins that have yet to be explained or fully explored). Mars gets 38 pages, clearly meant to be the default setting location. The asteroid field gets 2 pages; and in the Mars section we learn that this field was once a planet, destroyed in a cataclysmic war with Mars that also ruined Mars' ecosystem and led to that civilization's long decline (interestingly, this is also similar to Space:1889, where the asteroid field was also once a planet). Jupiter gets almost 12 pages, divided into its various moons (including Europa, where the ominous super-civilization is found). Saturn gets two pages; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto get three and a half pages collectively; these worlds have barely been explored yet.

On the whole, the setting section is awesome; though there's very clearly one planet missing in all this: Earth. We don't get much of anything about the homeworld, not even a primer for those people who might not be altogether clear about what real-world Earth was like in 1938. Never mind the question of just how space exploration would have affected human culture and history from the 30s onward; even if we assume (as the book seems to want us to) that nothing much has changed yet in the 5 short years that humanity has rushed out into the stars, there are still some really pressing questions: is there still a great depression? Is the League of Nations still useless (or even more useless)? Did Hitler still expand in Europe or would he be too busy looking for "lebensraum" on Mars?

I think there was something of a missed opportunity there, even if the plan was to change very little on the home front. We don't even really get a simple breakdown of the world powers; the closest we get is that Mars has sections detailing each of the colonized/occupied areas by the Earth powers. At the very absolute least it would have been a good idea to have 1-3 pages saying "ok, these are the major world powers going into space, these are their leaders, this is how they're handling space exploration/conquest, and here's a quick-read index of where in the solar system they are and what they're doing", then have fuller explanations in each planetary entry pretty much as they already did.

The mechanics for character creation start at p.94. They're pretty similar to the aforementioned Doctor Who rules, but with a few modifications. You start out with a set of (42) character points. With these, you must buy a species package (possible species include Earthling, Europan, Ganymedian, Ioite, Venusian and 8 types of Martians, separated by caste). Then you can buy an Occupation package; this is a great element to reduce the lousiness of point-buy, since it shortens the process considerably. It is not strictly obligatory, however; with GM approval you could theoretically just make your own set of choices. Occupations include things like citizen, diplomat, explorer, merchant, military, miner/scavenger, native, scientist, law enforcement, Europan Emissry, Deutsche Marskorps War Walker Pilot, Martian War-Priest, Rocket Pilot, Rocket Ranger, or Venusian Harvititoi (essentially, a 'wanderer'; it's a Venusian thang).

Then you choose any extra skills or traits (the list of traits is a bit different, obviously, from Doctor Who, but still pretty close to the same thing). The races and occupations are given detailed information in their own chapters, as are attributes, skills and traits.

The section on equipment provides a good list of standard terran equipment (cavalry sabers, swords, machineguns, etc.) as well as more unusual objects like Martian or Ganymedian equivalents to the bow, Martian stun balls, Europan Disintegrators, plus some earth-made pulp stuff like Tesla's "RAY guns" ("ray" standing for Radiation Accelerating Weaponry, apparently), armors of human and alien make, vehicles from the 1930s (and pulp sci-fi vehicles like the "rocket car" or "rocket pack"), Nazi mecha (why do they always have mecha?) like the Panzerschreiter (a "four legged war walker with a ray canon") or the one man two-armed two-legged armored vehicle called the laufpanzer. There's a large-ish section on interplanetary rocket ships, including detailing just which nations have them (apparently even the Brazilians have a couple, while the Mexicans have built a single ship but they don't actually use it, just keep it on display in Mexico City as an example of national pride), as well as the UFO-like Europan space saucers. There's about three pages on ancient Martian technology too. The chapter ends with a section on "equipment traits", which provide statistical guidelines that could be used to make other allowable high-tech items.

The chapter on the system rules is pretty much a repeat of the Doctor Who rules, with some changes to details for the new setting (for example, alien diseases and poison from Mars, Europa, etc.). As before with these rules, a 'story point' can as written be used for various purposes, and one of these is to "bend the plot" (which really means doing an out-of-character change to the universe). This is obviously shitty, but it is also something that can be completely excised from the game without any real consequences, thus maintaining the game's regularity as an RPG. They've kept the same initiative system as in Doctor Who, which means that people talking go first, then movement, then non-combat actions, then fighting; this will flavor the nature of play somewhat.

In any case, the GM section lays out four very clear-cut rules in an excellent way, that makes it very clear where this RPG stands (and if only these rules were found in every regular RPG!): first, have fun. Second, the GM is always right. Third, be consistent as a GM. Fourth, be fair (in terms of not favoring one player over another or favoring pet NPCs or that sort of thing). Really, if that had been the whole GM section, I'd have found it satisfying (and the way this has been stated is pretty much how every RPG book should be forced to have it!). But in any case the section goes on to give some relatively useful guidance for what kind of games ('series') you can run with Rocket Age: stuff like being agents (like say, Rocket Rangers), explorers, alien natives (for an interesting twist), pirates (in space), soldiers, or a ship-and-crew scenario. Five sample scenarios are presented in a pretty broad format, each taking about a page.

The section on creatures is quite good and varied; they very cleverly give a few of these monsters a section on potential plot-hooks; but strangely this seems to peter out and they don't carry on with it throughout the chapter. Even so, you get a pretty good selection (13 alien animals; the first four with plot hooks) of unique alien creatures; not really a full 'monstrous compendium', but enough to give a GM an idea of how to make alien wildlife.

So, to conclude: Rocket Age is a great RPG. If you dig pulpy sci-fi 1930s style, if you want to go punch space-nazis, engage in exploration of John Carter of Mars-style planetary civilizations, you'll dig the game. If you liked Space:1889, you'll probably really like this game. If you enjoyed the Doctor Who RPG, you'll already know the system. Altogether a fine product.

Rocket Age

Using DAZ3D

I'm not sure this belongs on TheRPGSite, but at least one person seems interested, so please forgive me if it doesn't.

I used to love doing CGI stuff in the 1990s, except trying to render things on a Mac LCII was... fucking painful.

I kept at it with Bryce and Ray Dream Designer, Ray Dream Studio, and Carrara, until finally I gave up about 10 years ago -- I couldn't afford to keep up with the software and hardware.

Recently, I was grousing about artwork for RPG projects. It costs a lot to have decent commissioned artwork, which is only fair! Except if I'm making something that I MIGHT get $100-200 from, ever, spending $400 on artwork is kind of a losing proposition.

So it occurred to me to go look at what's available now. Last time I poked around, I found Maya free for personal use, and the interface made me curl up under my desk.

I found DAZ3D...

DAZ3D is owned by the company that now owns Carrara, with strong human figure without being hyper-focused.

Poser, for example, is really focused on human figures, so support for other props and scenes is weaker.

Bryce is great at terrain modeling and environments, but less on props and human figures.

The nice thing about DAZ3D is that it is free. Like, legitimately free -- you get a bunch of human figures and shaders, a few scenes and props. It's somewhat limited, but you can make interesting stuff.

For example, the following cost me $0 (it's one of the first things I made in 10 years, so... yeah.)

Using DAZ3D

Is this thread appropriate for this site?

I have an article in mind of 'strategic tips to use DAZ3D.'

Given the desire of some gamers, particularly homebrew/selfpub types, to create interesting artwork, it seems like it MIGHT be appropriate in the Dev section.

Yea or nay?

Troupe Play

Troupe play is play with each player having more than one character, serving different roles. There are several ways to structure Troupe play - and each is best suited for a different play style. Here are some guidelines for setting up troupe play in any game:

The Mission Impossible Troupe

The players each have one character in play at any given time, but the group leader selects the particular characters, one from each player, used in this session or story arc from two to three characters offered from each player. The characters should be different types, but roughly equivalent skill level. The name comes from the old Mission Impossible TV show, where the MI leader - Mr. Phelps - would look through the currently available agents and select ones suited to the particular mission at hand. On the TV show, of course, the ones selected were almost always the same, but allowed for selection of particular guest stars. In principle, however, the method enabled the group leader to select an optimal selection of skill sets, and it is this principle that should be followed. it is best used where the PCs are all members of some larger organization, and are all specialists.

The Tri-level Troupe

The players each make three characters ‐ perhaps an older character with lots of skills, a mid‐level character with moderate skills, and a young character with few skills. Another form would be officers, NCOs, and grunts. Groups can be mixed ‐ with varying levels of competence ‐ or matched ‐ with everyone more or less equivalent. This form allows a more hierarchical model, with one or two main characters who lead the others, a couple secondary characters, and the balance as low level cannon fodder, which is great for side-quests, detached parties, and any other simultaneous play, where two things are happening at the same time.

The Teacher/Trainee Troupe

A player or the GM makes one older, experienced character, the Teacher. The rest of the troupe are Trainees, just learning their craft, whatever it is. The Teacher leads the groups in learning situations, which can be canned training courses a la the Danger Room, or low risk real life situations. Of course, risks can be deceptive, and a low risk situation can go bad fast. this is a great model for some supers groups - X-Men type supers schools, junior members of a Justice League or Legion of Supers organization, or even sidekicks. It also lends itself to a Harry Potter type wizard school.

The Classic Troupe

This is the form taken by Ars Magica, where PCs played a Wizard and a skilled warrior Companion each, and the relatively unskilled Grogs were played by whoever wanted to play them. The players make two characters each ‐ perhaps a spell‐casting type and a competent warrior type. They also make a group of less combat-skilled types, such as young trainee warriors. Each competent warrior is paired with a spell‐caster played by a different player, and the trainee warriors are miscellaneously played by anyone who wants to as an additional character. This can also be the setup for games where the different groups are different intelligent species, such as riders and dragons, or pilots and intelligent star fighters/mecha. The less-combat skilled types can be attending the dragons, or mechanics for the mecha.

The Battle Troupe

Each player makes a group commander, and the other players each make a character to serve under each leader. This is great for military games, where command is distributed, and small groups are working as parts of a larger whole - such as crews of small military starships, or tank crews, or the officers of a Submarine wolfpack. Each unit functions as a separate whole, yet working together with other units for a single mission or purpose.

Info

Morton's List - Anything Similar?

I am intrigued by this rare and yet highly praised game as it seems to be a generator of activities to be used when one is bored, although there are only 360 it can produce. But, like I just said, it is becoming rare and hard to find at a fair price. I have searched Google for "inspired by morton's list" and "morton's list similar games" and, like always, nothing relevant was to be found.

I was hoping there would be other games adopting the idea of "random reality," wether ideas on a forum thread, indie games being sold online, or just books with lists to roll dice on. I would also hope that the activities be family friendly and not something better discussed in an Insane Clown Posse rap (*snickers* You see what I did there? :D )

I wish Word Mill Games would develop something like this.

Morton's List - Anything Similar?

Scrying: Plot solvent?

How has that worked out in actual play? It looks like plot solvent.

Seeking System Expertise for Recommendations

Hi All. I've come out of lurking as I'm looking for a little advice from a great community that plays more than just d20 games.

I am looking to put together a homebrew system to meet the goals of our table as well as for the game world (we're very burned out on d20). However, I'd like to try to start from a single core system and work from there, pulling and pushing parts as needed.

I've read a Lot of threads the past couple weeks about which system is better, 3d6, d6, Heroes, Gurps, BRP, d10, etc. but the answer always boils down to "What do you want to do with it?" Thus I thought I'd ask the question of all of you who have the experience with the systems. If I want to do what I list below, which system would you recommend and why? Or what systems do you think might work well if mixed and converted and why?

What we want:

* Mechanics: I'm generally looking at the Generic systems but haven't settled on a specific dice mechanic. I'm leaning toward BRP d100 because it seems one of the easiest to convert to (its easy to convert ANY system to %) and when combined with RQ has SO much material. However, I think I'm in love with the EABA d6 system as it is one of the best dice systems from a math and probability aspect I've seen to date. However, I don't care for some other areas of EABA so I wouldn't use it outright, but if I did look at going the d6 system route, I'd swap the core d6 mechanic for the EABA d6 mechanic. That said I do want to use an Attribute + Skill based system.

* Species: I want a system that will allow drakes, fey and giants as PC races along side typical humanoids without being broken. FantasyCraft did this well for a d20 system.

* Classless: I want to convert over a form of Lifepath system based on a Point Buy system for keeping the paths relatively balanced. This will either mimic something like Burning Wheel or Traveler depending on which ends up being easier to model when converting to the point build system. This would be a front load work for me as the designer, but it would remove the stigma of "point buy" systems that our group has as being too "complicated" and "too much time to make choices".

* Magic / Powers: Ability to support various different styles of magic, unlike D&D where its all the same magic with a different skin on it. I also want to be able to have Magic as Powers. I use a Sorcery model that is more like innate magical powers (aka superpowers) than "casting spells". Other magical systems will very from hard coded spellbooks for Wizardry, to other systems like Allomancy (Mistborn rip), Furycraft (Codex Allera rip), Psionics, Blood Magic, Rune Magic, Witchcraft, Pact Magic, etc. I want to design each so that they feel different from one another and even in areas where they are the same ("I cast spells") the mechanics are different even if as little as different attribute requirements, different skills, etc. Thus I do need a system for Building Powers as well as a way to implement magic systems.

* Modularity: I want to be able to pull parts out and sub in other parts where necessary since no one RPG is "The One to Rule Them All". Obviously something like Fate Aspects is easy to port, but something like a Shock Clock Initiative might not be. I'd also like to have a base system that has 2 modes of Combat, Simple and Advanced. Simple combat being a stripped down basic system based on Mind's Eye and very fast resolution, primarily for mook fights or fights that are more emant to set the feel for a coming major combat. Advanced is the full blown tactical combat for those really important fights.

* Complexity: The system has to be less complex and Player front-loaded than Hero or Gurps, though technically the Gurps framework might be a possible runner if I were to have a good idea of how to break it all down considering the sheer number of 4E books there are to have to go through.

Is that enough to go on for a recommendation of preferred base system? If not ask away and I can answer in more detail.

PS: On a side note... IF you were going to mix d100 sources of BRP and RuneQuest... what concepts or mechanics would you steal from RQ and from what version of RQ?

Toyota’s New Power Control Units Proven to Be a More Efficient Hybrid Solution

Probably not 4th gen Prius ready but a more efficient electric drivetrain is a huge plus.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 29, 2015

Toyotas New SiC Power Semiconductor Technology.

Using a "Camry" hybrid prototype, Toyota is testing a brand new technology to evaluate the performance of silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, which could lead to an efficiency improvements in hybrid vehicles with electric powertrains.

Power semiconductors is a device that is used as a switch or rectifier in power electronics. It is also a power device used in an integrated circuit. It is usually used in "commutation mode" i.e., either on or off.

Power control units (PCUs) are used to control motor drive power in hybrids and other vehicles with electric powertrains. PCUs play a crucial role in the use of electricity, supplying battery power to the motors during operation and recharging the battery using energy recovered during deceleration.

Power semiconductors account for approximately 20 percent of a vehicle's total electrical losses and by raising their efficiency, large gains it total efficiency can quickly increase overall powertrain efficiency.

The newly developed high quality silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors that Toyota is speaking about here creates less resistance when electricity flows through them and thus the large increase in efficiency.

The technologies behind these new SiC power semiconductors was developed jointly by Toyota, Denso Corporation, and Toyota Central R&D Labs as part of the results of a broader R&D project in Japan.

The Modified Toyota Camry Hybrid

In the Camry hybrid prototype, Toyota installed SiC power semiconductors (transistors and diodes) in the PCU's internal voltage step-up converter and the inverter that controls the motor(s). PCU voltage and current as well as driving speeds, driving patterns, and weather conditions are being collected. By comparing this information with data from the current units, Toyota will quantify the efficiency improvements of the new SiC power semiconductors.

Data from testing will be reflected in development, with the goal of putting the new SiC power semiconductors into practical use as soon as possible.

The all-new PCU.

While it appears this is to new for the 4th generation Prius, could there be similar advanced technologies within the upcoming 2016 Prius that has yet to be revealed? I cannot wait to hear about it myself. :)

Fords 4Q and Full Year Results are Profitable despite Challenges

Norh America drives the company and nothing says that more than the all-new F-Series Pickup.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 29, 2015

2015 Ford F-150 XL regular cab shortbed with the optional 2.7L EcoBoost I4 engine - $27,410 incl. D&H to start and offers owners an excellent 19/26/22 mpgUS city/highway/combined rating.

Earlier this month Ford kicked off the most extensive truck marketing campaign in its history in order to promote the all-new 2015 F-150. The adverts are being seen on everything from college and professional football to professional bull riding and country music. Given its massive profits to the company’s bottom line, it is money being well spent.

Ford 4Q and Full 2014 Year Results

Ford this morning reported its 4Q and Full 2014 results. In the fourth quarter, Ford’s North American pre-tax profit of $1.1 billion, down $252 million compared with the 4Q of 2013.

Fourth quarter net income equated to $52 million, a decrease of $3 billion compared with a year ago due in part to a one-time 4Q charge of $2.1 billion consisting of $800 million for an accounting change in Venezuela and the ongoing wind down of plant closures in Europe.

Fourth quarter wholesale volume and company revenue declined year-over-year by 2 percent and 5 percent respectively. U.S. 4Q market share was 14.3 percent, down 1.1 percentage points from a year ago. This loss was explained with lower F-150 sales volumes as the all-new F-150 was being prepped for sale.

Company Executives stated the introduction of the latest version of Ford's F-150 pickup truck was going "extremely well" with sales of the F-Series possibly being the best January since 2004.

Full year 2014 pre-tax profit was $6.3 billion, a decline of $2.3 billion compared with a year ago. Net income of $3.2 billion was $4 billion lower than a year ago,

Global wholesale volume was approximately equal to 2013, while revenue was down 2 percent.

Specific top North America, Ford’s operating margin was 7.4 percent, down 0.8 percentage points from last year.

The company’s worldwide pension plans were underfunded by $9 billion at the end of 2014, unchanged from the end of 2013 despite significantly lower discount rates.

South America - South America reported a pre-tax loss of $187 million in the fourth quarter, a decline of $61 million from the prior year. Ford stated higher warranty costs were the cause.

In the 4Q, wholesale volume and revenue decreased by 2 percent and 9 percent, respectively as the regions SAAR of 5.3 million vehicles, down from last year’s 6.1 million.

South America’s fourth quarter market share, at 9.4 percent, was up 0.9 percentage points from a year ago. Operating margin was negative 7.6 percent, down 2.9 percentage points.

For the full year, the company lost $426 million.

Europe - Reported a fourth quarter pre-tax loss of $443 million, an $86 million improvement from a year ago.

In the 4Q, wholesale volume improved 5 percent while revenue declined 2 percent.

Ford’s Europe 20 market share, at 7.6 percent, was up 0.2 percentage points from a year ago.

Middle East & Africa - Ford reported a loss of $82 million for the 4Q, $22 million improvement than a year ago. Operating margin was negative 8.2 percent, a 2 percentage point improvement from last year. The improvement is more than explained by higher net pricing and favorable mix.

Wholesale volume and revenue also declined from a year ago by 10 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Full year wholesale volume and revenue declined compared with a year ago and operating margin and profit improved.

Asia Pacific incl. China - Ford continues to invest in Asia with new plants. The Asia Pacific region was responsible for a 4Q pre-tax profit of $95 million, a decrease of $14 million from a year ago.

Wholesale volume was up 2 percent from a year ago, and net revenue, declined 9 percent. Wholesale volume in China increased 5 percent from a year ago.

Market share in the quarter stood at 3.5 percent, down 0.1 percentage points from a year ago. Market share in China also fell 0.1 percent, to 4.3 percent.

Fourth quarter operating margin for Asia Pacific was 3.6 percent, 0.2 percentage points lower than a year ago.

2014, Ford’s China joint ventures contributed $1.3 billion in pre-tax profit, reflecting Ford’s equity share of earnings after tax.

Ford’s global full year sales of 6,321 million was down 33,000 vehicles from 2013. This compares to Toyotas, VWs and GMs 2014 Global Sales results of 10.23 million, 10.14 million and 9.92 million vehicles respectively.

Ford’s early afternoon trading is up about a quarter to $14.72.

I hope JoeTheLawyer is around, I would like to pick his brain on something.

Joe, you used to follow Hasbro quarterly reports. Can you ever recall D&D being mentioned for Hasbro revenue numbers before like this? I remember a new edition announcement once, and I think an "innovation" mention once, but I don't recall a "revenue" announcement before, for D&D.

Here is the quote. 10-Q for the quarter ended this September (which means only the Starter and PHB and not for very long)

"In the quarter, higher net revenues from MONOPOLY, MAGIC: THE GATHERING, SIMON, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS and OPERATION products were only partially offset by lower net revenues from other games brands, particularly BOP IT!, DUEL MASTERS and JENGA. In the first nine months of 2014, higher net revenues from MONOPOLY, MAGIC: THE GATHERING, SIMON, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, ELEFUN & FRIENDS and OPERATION products were more than offset by lower net revenues from other games brands, particularly BOP IT!, DUEL MASTERS, JENGA and TWISTER."

and

"The games category benefited from higher net revenues from MONOPOLY, MAGIC: THE GATHERING, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, SIMON, CONNECT 4 and OPERATION products in both the quarter and nine-month periods ended September 28, 2014."

Why is my 228,000 miles mpg BETTER now?

Let me set the stage

My 1998 Suburban 2 wd-bought for $2950 195,000 miles in 2007

is our second car

We needed something when "cash flow" ha,ha problems happened in 2006

so Pilot Titan Prism got sold ($39,000) and Prius+ancient suburban($22,850+2950)

got bought-improving family mpg to well above 30-from maybe 19mpg-ongoing fuel savings

and we retained the ability to evacuate 2 leggy greyhounds 4 or 5 crated cats+3 adults.

Anyway I sub teach sometimes/

One school is exactly 10.2 or 10.3 miles away(return leg a bit farther)

I have made the trip there-last year-many times

Last year-in these temps-40 DEGREES am 68 degrees pm

I would STRUGGLE to get to 15mpg on the cold engine trip out .7 gal out

On the trip home I would OCCASIONALLY hit 16 -but usually high 15's

Now I am crossing the Mississippi- probably 250 foot altitude gain loss-

Guessing since I DWL (follow the slowest truck I can find-usually dropping to 40 mph on 50 mph bridge) the bridge is nearly a wash-but doesn't matter since

My QUESTION-

Why am I getting 16.2 16.4 16.1 on my 6 trips-in this weather??

roughly .8 better 6-7% better than usual/.

Now I did just change the oil-but to my usual Mobil 1 10w30

I have never thought that Old oil was more viscous(granted it does feel a bit sticky at times)

I change oil once a year-extended service mobil 1-$31 at WAL mart

Is there ANY CHANCE that the ethanol content in gasoline has been decreased

since oil is now cheaper -much cheaper-that ethanol

Surely the EPA doesn't require a full 10 or 15% ethanol

Yeah my mpg-seems like "pure gas" MPG

Not 10% mpg

What is the GOV actual requirement for ethanol??

Isn't it quite a bit lower-for oxygenation=than 10%-even in cold weather?

Now I guess it is faintly [possible I am doing something different

maybe I am gliding more on the bridge-actually putting it into N

I never switch off the engine-not even for lights(unless it is a 2 minute light-none on this route-and I glide in D because at less than 40 mph the suburban glideS in D as if it was in N-much above 40 mph and you can feel that trans causing engine braking-

under 40 mph and when you lift off it is as if the trans has been disconnected from the driveshaft

So any chance the ethanol percent is down??

Oh at the time-2007-I would have preferred a minivan-honda toyota-

but they were 2x the GM

And in hindsight-the GM has been great-extremely reliable and relatively easy to DIY parts switch-brake booster radiator intake manifold gaskets timing chain and gears(didn't need it)-starter door handles belt tensioner sway bar mount

and many other things that have slipped my mind

If I had to have a shop to the repairs-it would have been maybe $7000 or so

but DIY maybe $1500

and parts for older GM trucks are cheap and available readily EVERYWHERE

And it gives 21 mpg on long trips-not horrible considering it is a 5200 lb brick with a somewhat ancient drivetrain( well developed and reliable obviously)

Secondary question-any 2004-2006 GM 5.3 owners out there??

Do you actually get the 2 mpg city more than the last 5.7's??

Mine is rated 12/17 the 2004 are rated 14/18

they -2004 have much better brakes and much better 14% EPA CITY rating

Tempted to get one-once oil spikes and the HUGE SUVs become pink elephants again

yeah owners will bail about big time at $4/gal-last time that essentially gave them away at about $3.50/gal

and they stupidly switched to mid sized SUVS-to get the same 15%-20% better mpg they could have gotten with mild hyper milling-for $35,000 less

USA-E-INS really won't do basic arithmetic-they panic-sell sell when they should modify driving habits-and drive less-or drive the actual car-more

So

1) Any chance ethanol concentration is lower now that oil is so cheap

2)How does the 2004 2006 5.3 perform -2 mpg city better than last 5.7s?

The newer 5.3 with AFM not on the table-rear doesn't "fold flat" too expensive and AFM MIGHT be responsible for increased oil consumption in some models(engines occasionally actually failing-but usually just sucking in 1 qt per 1000 miles or some such-can't imagine that much on in CC does FE plug fouling-any good)

Charlie

Current SUPERHERO comics not by DC/Marvel?

I know there's a huge kind of revival of non-DC non-Marvel comics going on, but I seem to note that most of these are not of the superhero genre, they're weird urban fantasy, sci-fi sagas, horror, whatever, but not superheroes.

Are there are any CURRENT (not old, cancelled, discontinued, or maybe coming out if precious-princess comic writer ever gets off his ass) superhero comics not being produced by either DC or Marvel that are really worth looking at?

Iedereen post in zo'n ronde 10 screens.

'Regels':

- Maximaal 2 keer dezelfe serie in één ronde.

New Diesel Engines Don’t Increase Lung Cancer Risks, Study Says

New study says diesel aren't a threat

You probably heard about soot-emitting diesel engines and how they are a serious health risk now. They are way too many out there, especially in Europe, and they increase the lung cancer risks. There are even plans to get rid of them in around 10 to 20 years completely, but a new study says newer versions are no threat.

Boston-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) conducted the independent study of new technology diesel engine to find out whether the new units achieved the expected emissions reductions to improve air quality as well as whether they represent high health risks.

You’ll be surprised to hear, but the study has revealed that new-age diesel exhaust does not increase the risk of lung cancer or other significant health damaging effects in animals study.

[Cthullutech] Running the game

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for running Cthullutech? Is there a best mood and tone to maintain (bleak, flickering hope or heroic, for example). What campaign basis allows for the most diverse collection of PCs to work together while being reasonable in the setting? I want my PCs to interact with the typical setting (everyday people, the cultures, etc) so I don't think I want to run a straight military campaign. But some of the players seem to really want mecha. Not sure how to set things up exactly. I haven't run a Mythos inspired game before.

Feminism and (the study of) History

Today's everyjoe article is on feminisms (yeah, there's more than one) and on that particular branch which seems willing to ironically discount rigorous academic study as a "thing for boys".

Go comment, like, +1, reshare, etc, over there.

Best opening scene for a campaign

What opening scene was the best you've either set up or played in? No believe opening scenes really help set the tone of the game and can make or break if the players are hooked from the start.

My favorite was in a game I ran Call of Cthulhu 1929 nighttime bare knuckle boxing scene in a warehouse in Chelsea,MA. Really set the stage for depression era Lovecraftian horror that I was trying to set up.

OBD2 Port Splitter

I was thinking about getting this. I have the Progressive SnapShot connected to my OBD2 port, therefore I can't use my ScanGauge2 at the same time. Is this going to work?

Mitsubishi previews new plug-in hybrid concept

Mitsubishi XR-PHEV

http://ift.tt/1uxPP2N

Darren Moss - AUTOCAR.CO.UK - Jan. 27, 2015

Mitsubishi has previewed a new concept car that will make its debut at the Geneva motor show in March.

The concept, which is described as a “declaration of intent” for the brand, looks to be an evolution of 2013’s XR-PHEV concept and could point towards a future performance crossover that would sit below the Outlander PHEV.

The XR-PHEV concept, revealed at the Tokyo motor show in 2013, was powered by a turbocharged 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor, producing a combined output of 134bhp. The concept could return up to 68mpg and operate on electric power alone for 53 miles.

Looks kinda interesting.

Setting Geography/Cartography

Does it matter to you much just how the world 'looks'? Does the map in an RPG product affect your like or dislike of it? And quality of cartography aside, does a map whose topography makes no sense, or whose political boundaries seem crazy, make a difference for you?

[Interest] ACKS: B4 The Lost City

Anyone up for playing one of the classics?

You and your intrepid band were hired by a nobleman with an interest in archeology - he led you out into the depths of some Gods-forsaken desert, then proceeded to get himself bitten by something. In the depths of venom-induced hysteria, he told you of an ancient civilisation, long thought lost, that resided in this arid patch of nothing. You counted his tales, but after a couple of days wandering, you found a temple, eerily similar to a sketch found on one of the scrolls of parchment he carried...

I'll be using ACKS, cause I love it, with the Core and Player's Guide classes available to start.

For maximum old school, I'd recommend rolling for stats, picking a class, then rolling for a template.

Audi Program “Vets to Techs”

A great source from which to draw qualified hard working applicants to work on future Audis.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 26, 2015

Audi Vets to Techs

Last week Audi revealed the success of its Veterans to Technicians program.

Since the Audi Veterans to Technicians program launched in the spring of 2013, Audi dealerships across the country have hired 162 highly skilled former U.S. military personnel in careers as certified service technicians, service consultants, and parts specialists.

For Audi, the program also helps meet the future demand for trained technicians at the local dealership level as the brand grows and the number of Audi vehicles in operation on American roads increases over the next several years.

To date, 255 of the 283 Audi dealerships in the U.S. are taking part in the Audi Veterans to Technicians program.

Qualifications for the Veterans to Technicians program include not only certain levels of automotive or aviation mechanical experience but also clear personal records extending even to good driving records.

Veteran applicants receive hands-on coaching and interview preparation assistance. Those hired attend the Audi Fast Track Training Program to become brand certified. Hired veterans also qualify for a special tool purchase program sponsored by Audi and Snap-on Tools.

Veterans with questions and those wishing to apply online, and Audi dealerships interested in registering may visit Audi Vets for additional information.

How well can FATE handle PvP?

For the longest time I've been looking for a narrative system that can handle PvP. This is hard because PvP inherently tends to require drilling down into fine details because the players want to make sure every little thing is taken care of when enacting plans against each other, but narrative games require you to take some things with a grain of salt and just let them be.

Any version of Fate is fine; can they handle PvP well? Like a Battle Royale style scenario.

Heel de tijd crash dump na aanpassinen in editor.

Hallo,

Groetjes

Ford Invests in its High Tech Future

Silicon Valley Research Facility should improve Ford’s next generation connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles and the ever important customer experience.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 26, 2015

Just one of the new R&D directions Ford is leading in is home climate and security control.

Late last week Ford stated it will be opening a new Research and Innovation Center in Palo Alto, Calif., the heart of Silicon Valley, to accelerate its development of its highest tech soft technologies intended to improve future Ford customer purchase and ownership experiences.

In addition, Ford is working with Stanford University, a world renowned institution of higher learning in the sciences, also located in the heart of Silicon Valley. In that relationship, Ford is working with Stanford engineers on Autonomous driving with the company’s most advanced Fusion Hybrid Research Vehicle for next phase of testing.

Ford is also working with Carnegie Mellon University-Silicon Valley to develop improved embedded speech recognition that supports more natural language. The new technology relies on more natural speech patterns rather than a restricted set of commands we are currently used to.

Smart, Very Smart

Dragos Maciuca, the new senior technical leader for innovation, brings extensive Silicon Valley experience advising startups, developing and commercializing products, collaborating with universities and leading cross-functional teams. Maciuca holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from its Haas School of Business. After a stint at Apple, Dragos joined Ford to serve as senior technical leader at Research and Innovation Center Palo Alto. Near term, Ford will be hiring more engineers and scientists which in turn will create one of the nation’s largest automotive research teams in Silicon Valley with 125 researchers, engineers and scientists. Ford opened its first Silicon Valley office in 2012.

The all-new Research and Innovation Center joins Ford’s global network of research and innovation centers, including its location in Dearborn, Michigan, which focuses on advanced electronics, human-machine interface, materials science, big data and analytics; and Aachen, Germany, which focuses on next-generation powertrain research, driver-assist technologies and active safety systems.

Ford offered a sneak peek at some of its projects in key areas, including:

  • Connectivity: Ford is integrating a home control Nest application programming interface, targeting home energy and emergency system management while on the road. A vehicle communicates with the Nest Thermostat to switch it to Auto-Away mode reducing energy use automatically when homeowners leave. Once close to home, the vehicle sends an alert to set the house thermostat to the preferred temperature. Nest Protect can warn Ford SYNC when home emergency notifications are triggered.

  • Mobility: Ford’s Remote Repositioning mobility experiment is now in testing phase by the Palo Alto team. A person sitting in the Palo Alto laboratory can access real-time video streamed over existing 4G/LTE technology to drive vehicles thousands of miles away.

  • Autonomous vehicles: The Palo Alto team will expand collaboration with Stanford University that kicked off in 2013. For the next phase, Ford provided a Fusion Autonomous Research Vehicle to the Stanford engineering program to begin testing the path planning-and-prediction algorithms researchers have developed over the past year. The Palo Alto team developed a virtual test environment based on gaming software, called aDRIVE (for Autonomous Driving Refined in Virtual Environments), that will test algorithms such as traffic sign recognition in dynamic driving situations.

  • Customer experience: Ford is testing advanced human-machine interfaces to better understand how customers prefer to control systems with a significant amount of functionality. An example is the company’s multicontour seat. That features 10 adjustments plus two controls for 11 inflatable air bladders used for massage functions. Ford is researching the most intuitive and effective way to control the seat, including using natural language speech recognition and a smartphone/tablet based interface.

  • Big data and analytics: Ford is leveraging its OpenXC platform to learn how customers are using their vehicles, and is conducting analytics to detect patterns that can lead to improvements.

Ken Washington, VP of Ford Research and Advanced Engineering:

Quote:

“Working with the Silicon Valley research community will spark the new ideas, products and services that will help Ford change the way the world moves.”

NEXT based control from within car.

All in, Ford is spending a lot of its earnings on the soft technologies that make driving an advanced technology ladened vehicle more intuitive, less distracting, less stressful and more enjoyable.
