Bosch at Interbike last year.
Just a year after entering the U.S. eBike market, Bosch has established a new 4,000 sq. ft. office facility for Bosch eBike Systems in Irvine, California. The new office will manage sales, marketing, advocacy, application and technical support, service, project management, and quality management.
The new HQ will help Bosch eBike Systems support the growing number of bicycle brands launching pedal-assist eBikes with Bosch systems in the U.S. and Canada.
Some of the current users of the Bosch eBike drivetrain include BH EasyMotion, Felt Bicycles, Grace, Haibike, KTM, Lapierre and Xtracycle. Bosch-equipped eBikes will be available in 2015 on a wide variety of urban commuter, trekking, mountain, fat-tire, and cargo bikes.
In a prepared statement, Bosch is expecting eBikes equipped with its technology to have a big year in 2015 as more brands begin to offer eBikes with its technology.
Boschs eBike System, when mounted on a bicycle, has the power to flatten hills and shrink cities. It does this by boosting a cyclists human power with electric power at speeds up to 20 mph. The key components of the system are the PowerPack and Drive Unit, with a Li-ion battery, motor, and sensor technology from Boschs Automotive and Power Tools businesses. The end-result is the cyclist feels they are being pushed up the road by a tailwind as they pedal − great for outdoor adventurists and urban commuters alike.
Performance Line Drive Unit Overview - Cruise at 15 mph and peak at 28 mph
The Bosche Performance eBike pacakge.
The Drive Unit of the Performance Line provides a noticeable acceleration boost and is designed for dynamic eBike riding on any terrain.
The Drive Unit of the Performance Line is equipped with three sensors for pedal power, cadence, and speed with 1000 sensor measurements per second. This gives you dynamic and direct support over your entire speed range.
When the maximum speed is reached, the motor powers down automatically.
While you are shifting, the drive adapts its torque to the shifting process reducing strain on the components, cuts down on wear, and makes the shifting process more seamless than ever before.
Bosch eBike drive systems are designed for low eight and maximum power output. The compact gear arrangement allows for optimal integration of the Drive Unit into the frame to maintain the bikes standard ground clearance.
Due to the precise motor control and the rapid sensor signal processing, the Drive Unit produces minimal noise and vibration. The semi-enclosed chain helps to keep it engaged and protected from the elements.
The opening of the new eBike HQs marks another step in Boschs continued expansion in California. Currently Bosch employs over 500 associates in 10 facilities across the state that are active in R&D (Palo Alto) and a variety of businesses including automotive aftermarket (Fountain Valley, Ontario, Santa Barbara), drive and controls (Pleasanton), healthcare (Palo Alto), home appliances (Irvine), power tools (Anaheim), security systems (Ontario) and thermos-technology (Irvine).
I pass Irvine on every trip to Southern California so it looks like I will have to stop in for more detail the next time I am through. My oldest son is a huge fan of the eBike due in part to his 7 mile commute on a std. mountain bike with up to 400 elevation deltas.
