**I'd post an image of this, but it's a hexographer file I'd need to convert and post somewhere, right?**
Running a campaign isolated in a northern kingdom. I'm mainly broadstroking the names right now (major areas). Just wondering how some of these sound:
The Rune Kingdom: my placeholder for the kingdom name. Was thinking of using Goldstone, but that's a standby one of the players has seen before. Thought of just leaving it this way, but with the caveat that it's a misspelling of the Ruu'ein Family's name (they being the family of the King), which has come into general acceptance.
Cooganstrath (Coogan's Valley): northern valley abutted against the Whiplash River. Most folks wouldn't bother settling here, but a somewhat secretive group of ice gnomes comes in caravan across the river when it freezes during deep winter, bringing a vast array of goodies to send to the more southern cities and towns. The party will have their first adventure proper right here. The ruling family is--wait for it--the Coogans.
Black Dragon's Reach: Such is the name of a very large lake located to the west. It's be great to settle there, save it is the confirmed habitat and stomping grounds of a dragon (haven't decided if it is actually a black dragon, but folks who see it aren't usually up close). A choice dungeon located here (needs a name) as well as a ruined city just south of the lake.
Feydeep: mainly the stomping grounds of the Elves. The campaign features human kingdoms who aren't extremely tolerant. But I have Elf players, so....they need to come from somewhere.
Wavegrass: a large, hilly, region west of the Kingdom
The Cuts: the (human) name for the large, icy mountain range the Ice Gnomes come from.
Drumhelm: the name given to the Dwarves who leave deep in the mountains NE of the kingdom.
Shalefall: The mountains north of the Dwarves. I wanted treacherous mountains, known for falling rocks (why do they fall? because the mighty GM lives there).:-)
Heavenuckles: the human name given to 4 huge peaks located near the headwaters of the Whiplash, all of which border great snowfields and glacial rifts (I probably have those features wrong, so let's say they border coldness...that's what they border...very cold shit...cold...[did I mention cold?]). These are modeled to an extent after the great peaks in Asia (of which K2 is one). The Gnomes worship them. Only a few hardy Rangers have ever actually seen them.
The Fellfreeze (or Freezefell?): a cold swamp east of Shalefall.
The Scattervines: A hilly region east of Drumhelm that features forested hills, surrounding pockets of low, deep, dark, high-canopy forests.
The Battered Kingdom of Va'al Sethune: a broken, blasted area containing the ruins of a lost civilization. There are tales of 3 great cities located in the gray, dead forests at its center, as well as many, many old ruins here and there (and a lot of nasty shit, some say). This is the standard, "here thar be trezhure" (and monsters) area.
Midlake: Well, see, there's this lake in the middle of the Rune Kingdom, and Cletus (5 INT) called it "That there lake in the middle of the Rune Kingdom," sooooo...
Names still needed (feel free to suggest and/or create backgrounds! I'll use them! [but I need them before Monday]): {like how I farmed out that work there?}
Midlake towns: I have a village on the south end of Midlake, from which a road runs into the heart of the kingdom. Boats launch from this village to a second town located on the north side of the lake. The north village has a road that runs through hills into Cooganstrath.
Mining and Lumber city east of Coogansrath (the valley name doubles for the city name). The semi-independent lumber/mining town supports the Strath.
A second river farther south than the Whiplash: pretty important. Most of the Rune Kingdom's trade is bourne by this river and the road networks supporting it.
Cities along the river:
One connected to the south midlake town, right where this river splits in the north.
Two cities in the south, both along branches of a second split in the river (an east brand and west branch).
The rune kingdome capital: I'm supposing it's just called "Rune," but I'm open. The river's northern split heads east and empties into a big lake, next to which the Capital stands. It is bordered by Light forest to the north and hills to the south (I figure halflings might come from the hills).
Finally:
Names for the 3 great cities of Va'al Sethune.
Ideas for what REALLY happened to Va'al Sethune.
Names for a Dungeon near Black Dragon's Reach
Names for a pair of ruined cities in the Drumhelm that even the Dwarves won't touch, 'cuz....??
Thanks in advance for any ideas. Sorry if this is chaotic. I tend to start with a skeleton and an idea, then develop as I go. But naming is fun!
