Least Effective Villains?

What villains in an RPG setting, be it entire monster-races, or individual NPCs, that the setting tries to present as a great evil, or the designer seems to think are really interesting, are in fact neither?

Brave the Labyrinth

This is a review of the OSR magazine "Brave the Labyrinth", issues one to four. They are published by Small Niche Games, and edited by Peter Spahn. Each is a softcover book, varying from 26 to 44 pages, in the same size and format as Small Niche's Labyrinth Lord OSR modules. Each has a variety of articles by a number of contributors. I am reviewing, obviously, the printed versions of these magazines (described as a "fanzine for the Labyrinth Lord community" but that can really be usable in any old-school context, pretty much); but in addition to purchase they are apparently available as a "pay what you want" program from RPGnow.

And what you get is a mixed bag of fan articles. But on the whole, not too shabby. #1 has a bunch of new body-altering spells created by an assassin-wizard, some new monsters created by the mage guild, a dungeon map (cool, though only the map, numbered, but with no key or adventure to go with it), a halfing-adventurer-company set of NPCs, a couple of new magic items, rules on animal retainers, a neat alternative LL character sheet, a short article on tallow (what they make the candles with), a four-page adventure for lv.4-5 characters named "The Screams From Jedder's Hole", and a fairly filler review of a fan-made free adventure found elsewhere.

Generally, quite a bit of interesting stuff for 26 pages. I actually ran the Jedder's Hole adventure for my Albion group and it played out quite well, the players very much enjoyed it as an impromptu adventure on an evening where a couple of key players were missing (and thus the main adventure was postponed).

Issue #2 has some new spells and items (made by an illusionist named Neem the Inscrutable), some new demons named Blooroes (and their brood, which are made for a horror-fantasy vibe), a map of a village (named Aldriss, which has no further detail other than the map, though it does identify the various buildings therein), an orcish warrior order called the Voltherak, a list of gods of Law, Neutrality and Chaos, rules for 0-level humans for LL, another town map (for the "fortress of Hawksford" and its environs), six short articles (on a myriad of topics), some new magic items, an 2.5-page adventure for lv.3-5 characters called "Carnival of the Setting Sun", and another review of another free adventure. It's 30 pages long, but I think its not quite as good as issue 1; maybe because the first one had a better adventure in it.

Issue #3 is 44 pages, as the material submitted grows. It starts out with a 3-page list with illustrations of the covers of all the LL products released in 2013. Then you get a list of dwarven items. Then a 2-page article with floorplans, on a locale called the "Dagger and Wand Tavern". Then some rules on making Goblinoid characters in LL. Then a couple of pages on a new monster called the Vexare, which are described as "a cross between rats and dwarves". You also get a special ranger subclass called the Beast Rider, a strange racial class called "grimps" (which are a group of imps that work in a tandem hivemind), a bard class for LL, a description and lair map/mini-adventure for a tribe of goblins (the Targker Goblins), an article analyzing the elf class, a list of two dozen types of magic candles, a mixed bag of monsters, and another review at the end.

Finally, issue #4 is 39 pages long. It features some variations on the Dwarf class, some rules on chaos magic for monsters, the Demonologist variant magic-user class, a couple of full-page hexmaps of "the islands of chalm" (which look a bit like a variant of the Isle of Dread, and again have no additional information beside what's on the map; all of these were pretty much there just for inspiration), some additional rules for using Zombies, a humorous 'fantasy insurance' company for more light-hearted games, rules on weapon mastery for LL, some items of faerie-magic, a 7-page adventure for lv.1-3 characters called "The Ruined Tower of Hilsosk The Mad", and a review of the Red Tide setting book.

So what do I conclude about "Brave the Labyrinth"? As a rule, I'm not a huge fan of gaming zines, even the very best of these (Dragon, for example) seem to me to be kind of stuffed with a lot of material I'd never use. In this context, I'd say that Brave the Labyrinth does fairly well; it has a very good signal-to-noise ratio if what you're interested in is lots of good optional material for OSR play. In particular, if you're a fan of Labyrinth Lord, B/X D&D in any of its varieties, including LotFP, BECMI, the Rules Cyclopedia, etc. the material in here is all really usable. I think numbers 1 and 4 in particular do quite a good job, maybe because they have very playable (short) adventures in them.

Basically, if you're an OSR gamer, you can't go wrong with checking these out, especially at the price.

An RPGsite VTT mini convention weekend?

I was discussing RPGs you'd like to run and don't get an opportunity to due to lack of interest etc.

One thing that sort of developed was an idea to put up for offer to run an RPG via a VTT.

Taking that a bit further. I think an Rpgsite, sort of online RPG convention weekend could be cool.

This means setting aside a weekend to allow for time differences, life and work commitments etc where games up for offer are "Registered" and people sign up for them.

The games could be discussed and arranged here on the forums it might attract more people here anyway.

It could be a laugh and gives people a chance to run and play RPGs they would not normally have a chance to.

Is anyone interested in this?

An RPGsite VTT mini convention weekend?

An Alternate OWoD (Vampires Replaced by Revenants)

There was an idea I came up with in response to this thread: http://ift.tt/1acwNLW

The OP there asked about what might replace vampires in the OWoD after Gehenna. There was some discussion of ghouls replacing vampires which gave an an idea for an alternative timeline for V:tM where vampires die off in the middle ages and the Revenant ghoul families continue on in their place. I figured I wouldn't clutter up Cryptofblood's thread talking about that idea and decided to make my own thread.

I'll post a few of my ideas, but I'd like to hear suggesting from others and general brainstorming over the idea.

Sometime in the middle ages, the Antediluvians wake up, an early Gehenna of sorts, or perhaps something else. In any case, the vast majority if not all vampires are slain by the elders, leaving a world free of vampires and their influence. The exception are the ghoul families, who are living humans who have vampiric blood flowing through their veins.

These ghoul families survive and find their supernatural prowess increased, perhaps as a side effect of the destruction of vampires, as the power of Caine's blood is conserved.

As time passes, these ghoul families reproduce and spread out, gaining power in the mortal world with their supernatural abilities and long lives and creating their own secret society much like all creatures in the World of Darkness have. As the vampiric Clans did before them, the Revenants have rivalries and form alliances, fighting a shadow battle against each other both day and night.

As these families are old and to some degree insular in inbred, with the leaders of the families having lived for centuries, they are inherently conservative and slow to adapt to the modern world. Some are more progressive though and have some advantages and disadvantages based on this approach.

Vampires are legendary now, with only the very oldest Revenants having ever seen one. There are now myths about where the vampires came from, what they were like, and what happened to them - though most of the facts are now lost to history. Some Revenant families look back upon the vampires almost as gods, who disappeared and may return some day. Others think of them as cruel slave masters who are better off dead. Still others doubt that vampires existed at all and have other explanations for the existence of the Revenant families.

A tentative list of some prominent Revenant families. I'm still trying to think of organizations to place these families into, like the Camarilla or Sabbat. Suggestions are welcome.

Grimaldi - a rich and influential family that maintains close ties to mortals.

Zantosa - hedonists who gain wealth and power to indulge in forbidden pleasures.

Bratovitch - a family far removed from humanity that live in remote old mansions or castles.

Obertus - a family of scholars and scientists, keepers of ancient knowledge and pursuers of new information as well.

D'Habi - a family who worship demons and practice dark magics, they are torn between pursuing temporal power and serving the will of demons.

Ducheski - a highly inbred family of mystics who pay for their mystical prowess with their distance from humanity.

Rafastio - Another family of mystics, though they follow ancient pagan traditions.

Enrathi - once ghouls who kidnapped children for vampiric masters, now they heavily involve themselves in the worst sort of organized crime like human trafficking.

Marijava - a family who highly value stealth, they are known as spies and information brokers, occasionally thieves and assassins too.

Giovanni - the descendants of the ghouled survivors of the Giovanni family.

Maybe it would be good to create a few more or take and tweak some from the cannon.

Any comments or suggestions about this alternative setting idea?

[VTM] Alternatives to the Noddest Myth?

I wonder if there's any alternatives to the Noddest myth for Vampire: The Masquerade for those who don't want to use it or present it as a myth? I heard Dark Ages Vampires had other options yet the other options don't exist in the modern era leaving the Noddest myth as "universal truth" which can be highly problematic for me.

However I think it doesn't help that the generation system for example is tied and serves as proof that the Noddest myth (including Caine, Antediluvians, and even Gehenna with the very possibility of the withering, wormwood, etc) is real which rules out any alternatives unless you have to alter the mechanics like replacing generation with blood potency unless I'm wrong though.

So what other alternatives out there can be used as Vampire origins?

Frozen Cortex

Citaat:

Oorspronkelijk geplaatst door Review

Frozen Cortex, formerly Frozen Endzone, is a futuristic American Football analogue where surprisingly graceful robots take the place of fleshy, armour-clad men. It’s evocative of Speedball and Blood Bowl, but it’s really Frozen Synapse wrapped in the theme of competitive team sports. The result’s a purely strategic and tactical game, entirely absent RNG, with players taking their turns simultaneously. I’m quite bad at it.

I used to play a lot of poker, and I only ever had one strategy: act like a maniac. If they couldn’t predict what I was going to do next, if they couldn’t get a read on me, then I’d be sure to win. I thought this every time and rarely did better than break even. I was so focused on what I was doing that I never spared a thought for my opponents. It’s a bad habit that Frozen Cortex has forced me to break.

The strongest throwing arm, the thickest shoulders, the fleetest feet – these are all ancillary. The greatest weapon in a Frozen Cortex coach’s arsenal is empathy. With turns taking place simultaneously, you’ve got to react to what you think your opponent will do, sometimes several moves ahead. When the next turn starts, where will their robots be? And where will they be after that?

A play, which usually lasts until the ball is picked up or intercepted, is the result of countless tiny decisions. It might only be seconds long, but planning out these seconds – the meat of the game – can be a lengthy process. This all plays out during the planning phase, where players get control over both their own team and the opposing one. It’s like having a crystal ball that reveals all the possible futures, but never which one will come true.

Intuitive controls make crafting virtual plays a doddle, and there’s absolutely no buggering around. Robots from both teams can be clicked on, while another click sets their destination, and if it looks like an enemy robot is going to be in the road, waypoints can be laid out to create a more elaborate route. Attackers, whether AI controlled or the minions of another player, tend to charge when they are trying to intercept, so a bit of zig-zagging or an unconventional route can pay off.

Every route can be stretched and every waypoint dragged, allowing every journey to be laid out with exacting precision. Even more fine-tuning can be achieved with the timer that can be manipulated on every waypoint. If you need a robot to move, but not right away, maybe to avoid a collision, then the timer’s a real boon.

Not heading straight for the endzone can actually net a team more points. While a goal is worth seven points, bonus points can be picked up for travelling across markers dotting the pitch. If you run through a bunch of them, and manage to reach the endzone, well then you’ve basically robbed a bank. But it’s bloody disheartening when that happens to you, and it probably will. That’s when you dramatically throw your cap on the ground in disgust.

When it looks like a run will only end in disaster, there’s always that powerful, robotic throwing arm. Any robot with the ball can toss it – a long way, too. Passes are fraught with danger though. What looks like a gap during the planning phase could be blocked by a sneaky rust-bucket on the opposing team, waiting to intercept the ball. If that seems like a risk, however, then it’s simple enough to click on the opposition’s robots and see if they’ll be able reach the path of the ball in time.

Watching those throws is a singular delight that I have, after a particularly emotional game and a couple of drams, described as “orgasmic”. When a turn plays out, it does so with cinematic flair, with fancy angles and slow-motion. And when it shows a long pass, drawing it out, making the wait agonising, well, it’s pretty hot.

It’s not all sexy, though, it does have quite a bit robot crotch-kicking and choking. This is a rough sport, where beatings take the place of tackles. These all happen automatically when robots enter each other’s tackle or chase zones. So if the ball-carrier tears down the middle and gets close to one of your defenders, even if you haven’t given him orders that turn, he’ll still give chase and hammer his foe on the head. This leaves your brain free to focus solely on positioning and movement.

All of these moves can be tested, tweaked and chucked out until the “perfect” play is found, and that can take a while. It’s something that inspires obsessive experimentation, and if the other coach does something you didn’t anticipate in your virtual play, a complex plan can come crumbling down. So many turns end in nail-biting tension, staring at a single robot, praying that they don’t go left. And then, in a moment, it’s over. The bastard went left.

Every time a play is committed to, it feels like this massive, weighty investment, bearing down until the outcome flashes onto the screen. Then it rushes out, in my case vocally. I shout and I roar, railing against misfortune or revelling in an amazing, lucky run. In those seconds, my brain must look a lot like it does when I’m watching the rugby. But while I’m only getting up off my chair and yelling at the TV or at the pitch a couple of times during a rugby match, Frozen Cortex is almost entirely made up of those climactic moments.

The whole game is like a highlight reel full of big hits, desperate chases and huge throws. Perhaps the lives of sports fans of the future are just too busy for games that go on for well over an hour. The size of the pitch is a big part of why Frozen Cortex is so damn fast. The pitch is bloody tiny; an itsy bitsy pitch that you could fit in your pocket. First impression: adorable!

I wouldn’t deign to mock it now. It’s the perfect size. The robots, five in each team, are placed perilously close to each other, and the pitch is peppered with walls, taking up much of the already cramped real estate. Some walls are low enough so that the ball can be thrown over them, but none can be climbed over, making the pitch a bit of a maze. They walls serve to funnel robots down certain paths, creating ambush zones and choke points, and that’s when Cortex stops feeling like a sport and starts to feel like two squads of warriors colliding.

The walls and the small maps are not restrictive. They inspire more confrontation and put players in difficult situations where every choice is meaningful. A huge, sprawling field might, ostensibly, offer more options, but not more impactful ones. Every move made should be part of a bigger plan, should be important, and as a match plays out, a single step in one direction can make the difference between victory and a painfully narrow defeat.

Frozen Cortex’s distilled tension makes each match feel like the best bits of sport and strategy gaming, but outside of the hot robot-on-robot action, things are rather dull.

Teams work their way up league ladders in a few single-player modes, one of which has a knockout rule, because permadeath is en vogue. There’s a dash of team management in the pre-game menus, and it’s really nothing more than a dash. The mechanical squads can be customised at the start of the season, in purely aesthetic terms, but after that, they are frozen in time. Robo-footballers don’t make any progress, there’s no training and no chance of an upgraded operating system or a new circuit board. They can be replaced with new robots with money earned from matches and bets, but with them being interchangeable, there’s no real opportunity to get attached to a team.

On top of the paper-thin management, there’s a story of corruption within the league that dodders along between matches. It’s told through a series of awkward interviews with dreary coaches and reporters, and it has no real bearing on the games. It’s hard not to just skip all the nonsense and go straight to the Future Ball. That’s where all the progress happens, anyway. The game doesn’t change, robots don’t level up, but how I play has certainly evolved, and maybe that’s all it needs – personal progress. And the best way to make that progress is the tried and tested method of failure and ass-kickings.

Some people are really, really good at Frozen Cortex. They might be psychics, robots or, god forbid, robot-psychics. And while every failure left me flushed with impotent rage, I try not to forget how I was defeated. Every game holds the promise of unanticipated strategies, ones that can get stored away and used against someone else. I haven’t reached the point where I keep a secret book of plays locked up in a drawer with a turned down photograph of an ex-wife, a bottle of bourbon and a gun, but that might not be a bad idea.

I still remember my first victory, which isn’t very surprising since it was less than a week ago, but it is memorable. I was, after a few very bad matches against some slightly more experienced players, finally pitted against a fellow fresh-faced newbie. Excitement started bubbling away, and I scrambled around in my brain trying to remember all the things that caught me out in my first couple of matches. And then I saw an opening, a chance to make a massive, dangerous run across most of the pitch.

All of my robots, apart from the ball-carrier, were on the left, waiting for a pass, or prepared to block an enemy if I decided to make a run down that side. That route was calling to me. “Fraser,” it whispered, “I’m totally safe. Loot at all the burly robot athletes standing around.” But it was just so obvious. The other coach would surely expect that. The path on the right was another matter. I was yelling during that whole run, banging on my desk and whooping like an imbecile, watching my little automaton narrowly escape a grabby foe when he turned a corner. When I saw the robot pass over the line and do his endzone dance, I accidentally knocked over the plate of toast that was to be my prize.

That stirring tale of victory against someone even less experienced than myself would have been a good place to end this Wot I Think, if it wasn’t for the bit about ruining breakfast. I can’t end it on toast. This gives me an opportunity to talk about style, which has nothing to do with the most important meal of the day.

The minimalism of Frozen Synapse has been set aside in favour of a more vibrant, but very clean, style. The robots all sport handsome holograms, brightly-coloured but not gaudy, and the pitches are sleek and utilitarian, apart from all the neon. The stadiums are frequently set in peculiar, out of the way locations, like the secret lair of a Bond villains, and it just so happens that these locations are all incredibly striking, from frozen mountain peaks to colossal caverns filled with magma. It’s a weird juxtaposition of Tron-like sci-fi and epic, natural vistas.

It’s easy to ignore the style in a game that’s all about laser focus. The most convenient way to play if from a bird’s eye view, turning the pitch into a board, and the board becomes everything, isolated from distractions. There’s no pageantry, either. You won’t find crowds cheering your robots on or vuvulezas bursting eardrums. It’s silent, apart from the excellent, hypnotic nervous_testpilot soundtrack.

Everything is stripped away, leaving two coaches to duke it out over a weird looking ball. It’s how robots would design a sport if, you know, they actually liked sport. Just the bare essentials, all purity and rawness with simple rules, simple tools and a clear objective. It’s a game that, at a glance, you know how to play. And you should probably go and do that.

60MPH mpg for 2.7 Ford pickup-and Turbos dodn't beat normally aspirated spark motors

Wayne et al

I saw the cold weather -20mpg- 60 mph mpg for the 2.7 Ford pickup

which apparently is rated at "just" 18/23??

I say "just" because I certainly expected it to BEAT -on paper

the Larger motored -and certainly less expensive(real life) 18/25 Dodge??

So Wayne do you have actual warm CA MPG and WEIGHT numbers for the Ford??

Now I am a Dodge and GM fan-

but I certainly expected Ford to produce Better EPA numbers than Dodge

and 18/23?? barely better than the GM 5.3 right?? a 360 hp V-8

which certainly would be cheaper to build

The Turbo spark ignition engines-are not producing

Does this strike ANYONE ELSE as SIMILAR to the early 1980's

When Turbo 4's were supposed to produce 4 cylinder MPG

But 8 cylinder acceleration??

But what actually happened is they didn't do EITHER- and coked up their Turbo bearings- meaning they were more expensive-less reliable- and didn't produce the MPG or the acceleration they were supposed to produce

Of course the normally aspirated 4 valve 4 cylinders became better-pretty much DID do both-good mpg and decent acceleration-

Dodge is beating Fords Turbo engines with MUCH simpler normally aspirated engines

and GM is matching them with a PRIMITIVE 60 year old pushrod 2 valve V-8

Once again-turbos work GREAT on diesels-but not so great on spark ignition motors

Seems it STILL makes NO SENSE- to try to make a small motor function " like" a larger motor

1) turbo engines are not lighter

2)inherent friction isn't less less

3) they aren't producing the better mpg-or the "same acceleration" of the simpler larger normally aspirated spark motors-

-

Just MAKE a LIGHT WEIGHT higher displacement BIGGER motor-and turn it SLOW-not too many RPMs

you don't have the problems with DETONATION( using extra fuel to cool mixture)

or the fancy "controls" and plumbing

and the COST

Yeah I don't see any turbo advantage with SPARK IGNITION motors

The GM 5.3 matches the fancy expensive Ford Turbos

The Dodge 3.6 HAMMERS them??

Where is the BEEF??

Charlie

PS Obviously TDs-completely different story-

1)they run lean with no problem

2)they don't "detonate" when pressure temps are "too high"

3) no throttle plate plugging intake

4)can run 17/1 compression PLUS 15 psi boost!!

Explains the 30% MPG advantage(and diesel contains more energy also per unit of volume)

60MPH mpg for 2.7 Ford pickup-and Turbos dodn't beat normally aspirated spark motors

Volvo will build its first car plant in the U.S., hoping to reverse a decline in sales in the world's second biggest auto market.

The Chinese-owned car maker said Monday it would invest $500 million to build the plant.

Volvo (VOLVY) sold nearly half a million cars in 100 countries last year, up 8.9% compared to 2013. That growth was driven by strong sales in China and Europe.

But U.S. sales fell 8% last year to 56,000. That's less than half the volume Volvo sold in the U.S. just a decade ago.

Spoiler for Resultaten:

Lankhmar

Well, with DCC Lankhmar announced, and Savage Lankhmar still in the works, it looks like there will be some Lieber Roleplaying goodness to be had. The most interesting thing to see for me will be how the systems adjust to Nehwon, which isn't as manically Pulp!!! as SW or as relentlessly gonzo as DCC.

With fickle priests ignoring prayers and a magic system with side effects that could turn a human into something like Sheelba or Ningauble, plus the Patrons system, I'd have to say DCC looks like a better fit then SW out of the box, but in either case it will depend on whether the book is the system with a thin coat of Nehwon paint or a true reimagining of the system with respect to the setting.

Video Games: What are you looking foward to?

As a complement to the other game thread I thought it would be nice to have a place to talk about our expectations, hopes, dreams, and fears for upcoming games :)

Personally I'm looking forward to Halo 5 but I'm not sure if it's enough to make me spring for an Xbone. It'll be good for sure but the library is just so freaking weak right now.

I'm also pretty hopeful for No Man's Sky which looks amazing but holy crap they are promising the moon so I'm also pretty cautious.

I've yet to dive into the 8th generation aside from the Wii U because honestly the libraries are just terrible at the moment. Certainly not worth the outlay IMO.

Mostly I'm looking forward to Nintendo titles and while I'm bummed by Zelda getting pushed back Splatoon and Star Fox should fill the gap.

What about you guys?

(Interest) Testing out a Game System

I basicly made up a game system that I call Struggle of the Moirai . Think of it as traditional gaming mix in with some elements of FATE. Mainly the elements I like which are is the ability to completely customize your character and use those customizations as powers to be used in the game.

What I need are brave souls that are willing to give this game idea a shot. So are you willing to test out mechanics in a game to see what works and what doesn't?

[Forgotten Realms] What's a nice place to set a game?

Thinking 1e (gray box and early supplements) for setting, and 5e for system, because all the cool kids seem to be doing it.

I've always wanted to set a game in Luskan. Captains of the People vs. Arcane Brotherhood, pirates, Old Illusk and all that northern wilderness to hexcrawl through.

Yoon-Suin + AoI

So this weekend I got my review copy of Yoon-Suin. I've got such a backlog of review books right now that it might get to be as long as six months before I can post a full review.

For the moment, though, not having heard much about it before getting it other than that it had a lot of weird-fantasy type stuff (slug-men, crab-men, etc), I was very surprised to find that the setting aesthetic made the impression on me that this is the best Arrows of Indra supplement ever.

I mean, particularly if you want to Gonzo-up AoI, but even in general, there's a lot of stuff here you could pretty well use straight-up.

What Monsters Would You NEVER Use in a Campaign?

. . . maybe because the picture in the monster compendium for your game of choice looked dumb, or you didn't like their ability suite, or they were too powerful/weak, you don't use psionics, etc.

Mine all seem to come from the Fiend Folio: I will never populate a campaign I run with Xvarts, because that picture just looks SO stupid. . . a giant head with legs growing out of it. Please. besides, there are so many other humanoid tribal races, did we really need one more? Also, the picture of the Tiger Fly (giant wasp with a man's badly drawn head) will prevent them from ever being used in a dungeon of mine. And the whole idea behind a CIFAL (a large group of bugs developing sentience and forming into a humanoid monster) just rubs me the wrong way.

What, if any, creatures would you never put into one of your adventures? And why?

The “advocate” for Brock Lesnar, Heyman has proven many times how he can help sway the audience and build storylines, and that’s been the case once again with Lesnar’s title defense match against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 31 this Sunday.

Do you enjoy sub-optimal characters more?

Most people I think are always hoping for that randomly-rolled D&D character that's all 16s and up or whatever. But do any of you, like me, tend to actually enjoy the challenge of a low-stat character and find that these tend to be more memorable in the long term (if you can get them to survive and succeed) than the guys that start with all the PC-privilege?

Do you enjoy sub-optimal characters more?

What Are You -- I Say, What Are You Doing With The Strange?

Me? Oh, just developing a recursion called Bemsville, which is a fictional bleed of 1950s flying saucer/atomic horror movies, which gets invaded once a week, like clockwork. Just that, and an adventure that uses the recursion as a jumping-off point for an exploration of the nature of the spark, what causes it, and stuff.

You?

What Are You -- I Say, What Are You Doing With The Strange?

Playing in "Evil" Empires/Kingdoms

Have you done this? Do you like it? Do you prefer to play evil characters in the evil empire? Good characters in the evil empire? Neutral?

Do you play the empire as totally repressive, nightmarish, etc?

Do you play it as a deeply corrupt place with a lot of injustices but where people can basically exist and lead potentially "normal" lives if they keep their head down?

Do you prefer to emphasize the decadence? Do you prefer Mordor, or Melnibone?

Why have clerics *and* paladins?

Sort of a spin off of the paladin-as-lawful-stupid thread, in which the thought occurred to me but it didn't seem to generate any response, whether because it wasn't relevant the discussion or I'm just the only one thinks it significant. Guess I'll find out.

Playing 3.5/PF for the past several years the thought has occurred to me a number times that there really doesn't seem to be a good reason for paladins and clerics to be separate classes. Both essentially fill the same niche of martial agent of divine will, the only real difference being paladins generally focus more on smiting and clerics more on support. Not that there's anything wrong with overlapping roles, of course, I just think the two are generally so similar in virtually every other respect nothing would really be lost if you just axed one, rolled the important bits from it into the other and called it a day.

My question isn't necessarily meant to be specific to 3.5/PF or even D&D in general, though that's undoubtedly where it will have the most relevance. I'm just curious. Is there some important distinction I'm missing or failing to consider, or are they just separated out from each other Because Tradition?

Why have clerics *and* paladins?

Challenge Bottom Division Favorites

Crestfallen - Bronze Age Fantasy Roleplaying

Hi there,

Around 15 years ago I distributed a free rpg online called Crestfallen, to me it was just goofing around, but it seems it gained a bit of a cult following over time. Well, I've started taking it seriously, and am prepping for a Kickstarter this year.

I have a Prefundia page set up (which also links to the website and social media - where I post very regularly), if you fancy checking it out:

Crestfallen Prefundia Page

It's a game of gods, spirits, wilderness and freakish weather - how very British! Crestfallen is based on a ridiculous amount of historical research, especially in regards to daily life and religious and magical practices.

Cheers,

Dan.

[cWoD] About the Lasombra clan....

Well recently I've played the recent "antitribu" mod for Bloodlines that was recently released and on there, it makes the Sabbat and Independant clans available to play as including the Tzimisce and Lasombra which the latter I have some serious concerns based on what I seen on there...

Because you see, one of the Lasombra armor sets includes a Nazi uniform and the creators backed this up saying it fits their Social Darwinist philosophy which not only that they also said that all Lasombra are social darwnists according to the their clan book therefore they're all Nazis which I find this highly problematic.

Question is, are every single Lasombra truly are Social Darwnists and therefore Nazis? Or is this not the case?

[cWoD] About the Lasombra clan....

[cWoD] Alternatives to Vampires...

Hello everyone,

I have a question I've been wondering for a while that in the cWoD setting I wonder if there's other alternatives to Vampires especially which let's say if there's a post-ToJ/Gehenna (especially wormwood) setting where all Kindred are gone and the 'surviving' are now mortals (if wormwood was true), then it that world what would replace the Kindred/Vampires being the closest? Although I don't want to use KotE however (since I would like to ignore it's existence) though due to personal reasons. Also I wonder if there's other undead types other than Risen that plays the closest to Vampires?

Or basically, what if someone wanted to play a 'vampire' but they never liked how Masquerade presented them and what other alternatives can they go with? Can they create a 'different breed' or could a existing splat can mimic and pretend to be a vampire even though they're not?

Or in short: I wonder if there's Non-Caininte Vampires (Vampires that are not descended from Caine nor do they have the beast or the same physiology as Kindred or basically Vampires that exist outside the VTM monomyth all together) that exist in the cWoD or they have to be created?

Playable races--where do you draw the line?

As Mike Monard has said on a few occasions, Gary had said that you can play a balor if you want, just start at level 1.

So my question is, what weird monstrous races would you allow, and how many have you actually had in your games or played yourself? I know that these two lines don't necessarily intersect, as I would probably allow a lot more races than I've actually seen in game.

For me, I do have limits. Heck, I'm not all that fond of having dragonborn and tieflings as "common" races in my campaign world ;). That being said, these are probably races I would allow and/or have been interested in playing myself as long as the player works with the DM to have a decent backstory and plausibility:

the common humanoids (orcs, goblins, lizardmen, etc)

minotaur

pixies/sprites

wemic

centaur

three-kreen (only in darksun probably)

Over the past 35 years, I've only actually seen played:

minotaur

wemic

ogre

goblin

three-kreen

Finally the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid!

Wonderful 2.5L Camry Hybrid drivetrain and all the utility you could ever want.

http://ift.tt/1ydRDjo

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Mar. 26, 2015

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – Just a peek... For now.

This morning Toyota finally announced the RAV4 Hybrid that it will show at this years New York International Auto Show on April 2nd.

It should have the same lineage as the very intriguing 2015 Lexus NX 300h. Meaning a modern interior and appointments and a little more edgy exterior design.

I will assume an AWD variant will be available or will be soon after the launch of the FWD model?

I also expect to see the Avalon/HiHy/NXh Qi built in charging pad although hopefully it is sized for today’s phablets and works better than its predecessors.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid drivetrain

What I am expecting is a duplicate of that in the NX 300h. Meaning the 2.5L Atkinson-cycle I4 mated to the company’s latest HSD iteration.

Engine enhancements will include a water-to-oil cooler for the electric drive motor and a revised front drive reduction ratio, improving fuel economy and hill climbing.

The new P314 transmission provides a kick-down function for greater acceleration performance. The transmission offers sequential shift which allows maximum power to be delivered on demand and increases engine braking when decelerating.

The hybrid battery pack will weigh less than 100 pounds and like all Toyota hybrids, not impinge on passenger or cargo volume compared to the non-hybrid.

A downsized Power Control Unit (PCU) with a double-sided inverter cooling system is sure to be included.

On the AWD front, an electric motor to drive the rear axle like the 14/15 Toyota HiHy while the front axle is propelled by gasoline or electric power, or a mixture of both. Torque distribution to the rear wheels will be dependent on driving dynamics and road conditions, and should provide some rear-wheel torque at start-off to minimize chance of wheel-spin under acceleration and on slippery road surfaces.

The rear motor just like the larger MG2 traction motor up front can regen power back to the pack during deceleration or downhill glides.

Expect the NXs HV control software that minimizes engine flare during acceleration and increases the sensation of linear acceleration.

Like all Toyota hybrids, expect to see the very familiar Eco, Normal and Sport mode.

Similar to our first look at the Prius v back in 2011, the RAV4 will incorporate a damping control function to reduce pitching on uneven road surfaces and increase ride comfort and stability.

I am hoping the RAV4 Hybrid will use the Corolla’s LED headlamps with LED accents. This remains to be seen but they are stylish, great in snow and use significantly less energy than the halogen’s most have grown up with.

I am also expecting the RAV4 Hybrid to arrive with 60/40 split fold down rear seats with not only tilt but a slide mechanism, ala Prius v. The NX incorporates a lift mechanism that I doubt will make it into the RAV4 Hybrid however.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

A larger look at the teaser that Toyota sent out.

I will leave the interior/exterior detail, infotainment and safety attributes on hold until we see the final version from NY next week. I tend to get a little wordy and my guesstimates are just that. Flip a coin and you may or may not win a prize. ;)

All in, I am going to try and hold Marian’s and my parents buying decision off until this vehicle reaches dealership showrooms probably sometime in early summer. Maybe you should too?

Would You Buy the $55,000 Hayabusa Powered Tanom Motors Invader?

Steering, gas, brake and clutch are likes a normal car's layout, and the shifting is available as a paddle or center lever.

William Connor - - March 26, 2015

Forget the boring modern closed cockpit car and the snowmobile styling of the Spyder. The Tanom TC-3 packs a 197 hp Hayabusa motor, carbon fiber with a sequential shifter, and a huge rear tire that flat rips it.

That's prototype number 1 you see above. It has an open cabin that gives you a view of the front wheels articulating over road imperfections. It also has steering you haven't experienced since running a go-kart, and that 197-horsepower super bike engine, which is capable of 60mph in 3.5 seconds. is just right behind you.

The open cockpit with a large canopy and a windshield wiper gives you the sensation of open air, but with better bug protection. The Invader, however, is considered a motorcycle and had to meet some pretty interesting guidelines.... [Read More]

Mountain Turtle

I got behind a Prius coming down the mountain today. He was only doing 30-35 mph coasting down the hills and around the curves. My 93 Cavalier was coasting much faster even with the 5 speed in 4th gear. Normally, I coast around 40-50 on these hills and curves. His brake lights weren't on so how come he was coasting so slow?:confused:

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid > 45 mpg combined

The upcoming Malibu just entered my “this could be great” round house. ;)

http://ift.tt/1HGGA7o

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Mar. 25, 2015

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid – Pricing TBA and at least a 45 mpg combined rating… Scheduled for the global reveal in NY on April 1.

A complete redesign of the Malibu for 2016 despite being a complete redesign for the 2013 MY. The company added a much needed 4 inches of wheelbase which will cure that “small kids only” backseat!!! The profile looks more modern with the cab rearward pull, steeper raked windscreen, less overhang front and rear, vertical nose style and a liftback like rear profile. If they add an even more modern interior than the Impala, their latest connectivity, and the promised efficiency increase, look out as Chevrolet may finally have a real competitor in the midsize segment.

The next generation gen Chevrolet Malibu will be lighter, longer, larger, and more efficient.

And now, a full hybrid drivetrain derived from the upcoming 2016 Volt!

Chevrolet released a really cool and I mean REALLY COOL release this morning. The 2016 Malibu will forgo the company’s POS eAssist mild hybrid system and will arrive with a full hybrid drivetrain derived form the next generation 2016 Volt. Hot Damn!!!

GM stated the Malibu Hybrid will offer an estimated combined rating EXCEEDING 45 mpg, higher than the combined ratings of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata hybrid variants and only falling 2 mpg short of the pricey Honda Accord Hybrid.

The Malibu Hybrid will arrive with all the latest aero enhancements including upper and lower grille air shutters and reduced ride height.

An all-new very powerful 182 hp – total system output - direct-injected 1.8L I4 is mated to the full hybrid two-motor drive system derived from a slightly modified 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Meaning a full hybrid system will power the all-new much and larger Malibu with electric only launch, full engine shut off glides and regenerative.

The engine features an Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery (EGHR) system that uses exhaust heat to warm the engine and cabin. This is different than the standard Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) included in almost every engine today.

GM stated the pack will be a, 80-cell, 1.5 kWh Li-Ion battery that is speced to drive the Malibu up to 55 mph before the ICE must start up.

I can see a lot of Volt owners placing this one in their drive... You know a PHEV-20+ variant with an 8 kWh traction battery could be put together for just $2.5 to $3k including the charger and control given the low price of Li-Ion packs today. ;)

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will be manufactured in Kansas City, Kansas, and is expected to reach Chevrolet showrooms next spring.

How Open Minded Are Gamers?

From trying to get people to play games (Empire of the Petal Throne for example) I have found that gamers can be some of the most close minded people I know.

Not that they are _more_ close minded, just that they have been Put to the Test and failed to deliver.

I don't know that system.

I only play {the most popular system that day}.

That doesn't let me play a {specific racial or class}.

...

Is it just my small exposure or is there a lot more talk than action when offered to try something new?

Gen Con to Possibly Leave Indiana

http://ift.tt/1CXPmQB

Organizers of Gen Con, said to be the largest gaming convention in the U.S., have threatened to take their event -- and potentially millions of dollars -- out of Indiana if Governor Mike Pence (R) signs a controversial religious freedom bill into law.

Supporters of the bill say that the legislation will protect people and business owners with strong religious beliefs from government interference. Opponents contend that the law could sanction discrimination, particularly against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.

I can see where a giant international event could be complicated if, say, a guy wearing a Star of David pendant gets refused service at a gas station along the way, the "Arab-looking" guy can't eat at a diner, the gay couple can't get a hotel room, and the kid in a jokey Atheist t-shirt can't rent a car. Even if 99% of businesses are fair-minded, it only takes one to really disrupt things.

This bill seems like a mean-spirited, backwards clusterfuck.

Do you run Your Paladins as Idiots?

That is to say, are they so completely hide-bound by their rules and alignment demands that they act irrationally?

Because it seems to me that this is what the critics of the class, and of D&D's alignment system, seem to believe is the "right" way to run a Paladin, and I really don't think that was either the intent or what the historical inspiration of the class demands.

Looking for feedback on potential system mechanics and general discussion.

First a question on some general thoughts on system design, do you think it's better to design a system and then build a setting around it? Or build a setting and design a system around it?

That said I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me their thoughts on some general ideas I had for a system.

I was thinking that I kind of dislike single die based systems. The results of a single die roll are a bit to swingy for my tastes. The range of numbers given by a d20 suits me well enough though, enough room is given for a bit of granularity.

So what I was thinking was this, everything works as a roll over check, combat and other opposed checks work on an opposed roll. So the attacker and defender would both roll, highest wins. Nothing remotely difficult for me to work out so far.

However due to my dislike for the up and down tendency of single die rolls I was thinking things would work like this. PC's and NPC's that are skilled in an area roll 2d10 instead of 1d20, whilst unskilled characters roll 1d20. So the baseline level of skill would allow you to roll 2d10, further ranks of skill after that would add a flat numerical bonus to the 2d10 roll.

So a basic scenario would work like this; A attacks B, so A being skilled with his weapon rolls 2d10 adding any relevant attribute or situation modifiers, B being unskilled with any weapon rolls 1d20 adding any relevant modifier. A has rolled higher than B so B is hit.

Are there any potential pitfalls to this approach? I know that it will tend toward skilled characters producing an average roll around 11 or so before modifiers, each successive rank in a skill should push that average up right?

Another thing I wanted to do was account for degree of success, particularly for combat as I was toying with the idea of having damage being tied to it. Off the top of my head it seems like you could count the difference between rolls to find the degree, maybe going be 5's being a level of success? Is there any quick and easy way to do this without having to come up with charts and the like?
