This recent PBS Idea Channel video hinges almost entirely on the idea that player character death (like the death if a four-color superhero comic book) is an undesirable outcome.
The title is obviously hyperbolic, but once more I deplore the trend towards edging death out of the game table, partly apropos of a recent 5e game where my Paladin's dauntless sacrifice was cut short by the DM's fudging.
Of course, I'm probably still bitter that some of the same people who praise A Song of Ice and Fire and Attack On Titan for playing fast and loose with pop culture convention by killing characters left and right, were incensed the day our dungeon ate five PCs in a single session (fuck yeah OD&D).
I'd go on a bigger rant but that'd probably be preaching to the choir here.
TL;DR not all comic books are about four-color superheroes; neither are all (and probably not even a majority of) D&D sessions.
