2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid – Pricing TBA and at least a 45 mpg combined rating… Scheduled for the global reveal in NY on April 1.

A complete redesign of the Malibu for 2016 despite being a complete redesign for the 2013 MY. The company added a much needed 4 inches of wheelbase which will cure that “small kids only” backseat!!! The profile looks more modern with the cab rearward pull, steeper raked windscreen, less overhang front and rear, vertical nose style and a liftback like rear profile. If they add an even more modern interior than the Impala, their latest connectivity, and the promised efficiency increase, look out as Chevrolet may finally have a real competitor in the midsize segment.

The next generation gen Chevrolet Malibu will be lighter, longer, larger, and more efficient.

And now, a full hybrid drivetrain derived from the upcoming 2016 Volt!

Chevrolet released a really cool and I mean REALLY COOL release this morning. The 2016 Malibu will forgo the company’s POS eAssist mild hybrid system and will arrive with a full hybrid drivetrain derived form the next generation 2016 Volt. Hot Damn!!!

GM stated the Malibu Hybrid will offer an estimated combined rating EXCEEDING 45 mpg, higher than the combined ratings of the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata hybrid variants and only falling 2 mpg short of the pricey Honda Accord Hybrid.

The Malibu Hybrid will arrive with all the latest aero enhancements including upper and lower grille air shutters and reduced ride height.

An all-new very powerful 182 hp – total system output - direct-injected 1.8L I4 is mated to the full hybrid two-motor drive system derived from a slightly modified 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Meaning a full hybrid system will power the all-new much and larger Malibu with electric only launch, full engine shut off glides and regenerative.

The engine features an Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery (EGHR) system that uses exhaust heat to warm the engine and cabin. This is different than the standard Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) included in almost every engine today.

GM stated the pack will be a, 80-cell, 1.5 kWh Li-Ion battery that is speced to drive the Malibu up to 55 mph before the ICE must start up.

I can see a lot of Volt owners placing this one in their drive... You know a PHEV-20+ variant with an 8 kWh traction battery could be put together for just $2.5 to $3k including the charger and control given the low price of Li-Ion packs today. ;)

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will be manufactured in Kansas City, Kansas, and is expected to reach Chevrolet showrooms next spring.
