Battle Scenarios in Sky Relics

Hi everyone as we have discussed previously, Sky Relics comes with a Skirmish Mode and an Adventure Mode. So today we are going to delve in a little deeper into how the Skirmish Mode plays. After play testing standard fleet vs. fleet battles, we learned that though they are fun, the Skirmish Mode needed a little something extra to add replay value and diversity. Our solution was to create scenarios of actual events in Targus. Now the Skirmish Mode also has the story telling power as the Adventure Mode. We have been brainstorming various possible scenarios, and so far we have decided definitively on three:

Attack/Defend: This one is pretty straight forward. One fleet has control over an outpost, and they must defend their base from an attacking fleet. Outposts are set up atop the smaller mountains throughout the skies. They act as sentries reporting happenings to the nearby ports. Control of these outposts are crucial in the Sky Pirate conflict. Each fleet has the same amount of Ship Gold to spend; however, the defending team also has an outpost piece placed somewhere on the map board. This is kind of like a boss battle for the attackers. The outpost piece will consist of a number of hexagons that fit on the game board (images to come soon). You can also equip a cannon card to each of the outer hexagons allowing the outpost piece its own attack phase with a 360⁰ line of sight. Winning works the same way as a regular battle. The defenders need to ward off the attackers, and the attackers must destroy all the defending ships and the outpost cannons.

Smuggler’s Delivery: Sky Pirates are delivering stolen goods to Fats at the port Brutal Stone. But there is a Commonwealth blockade! They have been trying to squeeze out the Sky Pirates' influence of Brutal Stone by rejecting anyone from docking or leaving. The Commonwealth will get more Ship Gold to outfit their fleet than the Sky Pirates, and the Sky Pirates designate one of their SkyShips as the smuggler ship. The goal here is not to wipe each other out but to target the smuggler ship. If the Commonwealth sink that ship, they win. If the smuggler ship can make it to the other end of the game board at a certain distance away from enemy ships, it made it through the blockade and continued to Brutal Stone for its delivery. The Sky Pirates win.

Merchant Escort: Targus skies are no longer safe for merchants. The Commonwealth now regularly accompany merchant ships for protection. This is an escort mission. These merchants just so happened to carry extra parts for SkyShip repairs. The Sky Pirates want that cargo, and they are happy to blast any Commonwealth to get it. Each fleet has the same number of Ship Gold to outfit, but the Commonwealth must designate two of their ships as the merchants. Those ships can move and make repairs, but they cannot attack. The Commonwealth must both destroy the Sky Pirates and ensure that at least one merchant ship survives. The Sky Pirates also must destroy their enemy, but if they want to keep the merchant ships alive as well. They need to disable the merchants to claim victory, but this can be tricky. Too powerful of an attack could sink the ships. If both merchant ships sink, then the cargo is lost to the floor. Nobody wins.

These are only the start of the scenarios. We are still brainstorming and playtesting to see what scenarios will make it to the Kickstarter. What would you like to see? What other scenarios do you think would be both fun and appropriate for a pirate-y setting?
