Hello all!
Driving a 2007 Mazdaspeed3 which has been a fantastic little car. Immense fun, while still being able to haul people and stuff around or haul a kayak on top. One thing it doesn't do is get particularly good gas mileage.
A couple weeks back I discovered that a $20 ODBII reader combined with Torque could give me instant mpg plus all sorts of other little bits of information. Since I know have 2 children under 2, money is getting tighter and figured I'd give hypermiling a try to save a bit of money.
After a fair amount of lurking and reading and a couple of weeks of experimentation, I've gone from about 23 mpg (about EPA for my mixed morning commute) to 34-35mpg. And that's without really costing me any time or being all that light on the throttle. Pretty sure I could get it to the low 40s already if I was willing to annoy all the traffic around me. :D
A Mazdaspeed3 is fun through corners or on a track, but sitting in traffic... But hypermiling gives me something to keep me entertained in between the places where the car can be fun. So now I'm having more fun than before, saving money, helping the environment, and hurting terrorism.
Thanks for the great advice here that made it possible!
