The Cedarville University Urban Concept entry named Urbie Over three years of development and continuous improvement allowed a 550+ mpgUS result at the 2014 Shell Eco-Marathon of Americas held in Houston, Texas last Spring.
Detroit, Michigan At the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Shell was on hand providing a small taste of what the Motor City will host and attendees will experience in just 4 short months from now. It is called the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas (#SEM2015) and is not only a demonstration of what can be done with hard work and thinking outside the box when designing and building automobile concepts, it is a learning experience far beyond what can be taught in the class room.
For more than 30 years the Shell Eco-marathon has challenged high school and University students - future engineers and scientists - to drive farther on less energy. In 2015, the event will be held in the U.S. auto industrys historic home town, Detroit for the very first time.
With students, partners and the public, Shell Eco-marathon Americas is a viable demonstration of Shells commitment to help the world meet its growing energy needs in a responsible way.
Shell Eco-marathon student teams from around the globe design, build, test and compete with their ultra-energy-efficient vehicles using various types of available fuel(s) in multiple vehicle classes. With annual events in Asia, the Americas, and Europe, the winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy. Some exceed distances equivalent to driving from Los Angeles to New York on a single gallon of fuel or greater than 2,824 miles per gallon.
The mileage challenge competition inspires the technicians, engineers and scientists of the future to turn their vision of sustainable mobility into reality. It also sparks passionate debate about what could one day be possible for cars and trucks on the roads we all drive.

Shell Eco-Marathon Americas - The Classes
The Prototype class designs focus on no-holds-barred maximum efficiency while the Urban Concept class design encourages the student designers to create a more roadworthy practical design while still focusing on a hyper efficient platform.
The cars enter one of seven categories, running on gasoline, diesel, CNG, fuel made from natural gas (GTL), Hydrogen, Ethanol and battery electric.
Shell Eco-Marathon Americas - Prepping to Attend
The first Shell Eco-Marathon Americas held at California Speedway in Fontana in 2007 saw 17 teams participating. This year, Shell stated that 38 High Schools and 60 Universities - over 140 teams are expected to participate.
A Shell Eco-Marathon Americas would not be an Americas event without teams from both North and South America participating. To that end, 11 teams from Brazil (represented by 9 schools), 13 teams from Canada (represented by 11 schools), 4 teams from Mexico (represented by 3 schools), 1 team from Chile and 1 team from Guatemala are scheduled to appear.
Shell expects 112 Prototype entries with 74 using internal combustion engines fueled by gasoline (51), ethanol (13), diesel (9) and one CNG entrant.
38 e-mobility drivetrain designs will include 29 battery electrics and 9 hydrogen fuel cells.
In the Urban Concept classes, there are 30 teams expected to attend. Of these, 18 will be propelled by internal combustion engines and 12 will be propelled by battery electric power and H2 fuel cells.
Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Past Records
In 2013, Laval University of Canada achieved 3,587 mpgUS in the Prototype class. In 2014 within the Urban Concept class, a team from Mater Dei High School achieved an incredible 905 mpgUS!
Shell Eco-Marathon Americas When and Where
On April 9-12, 2015, teams from across the Americas will compete in the 9th annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas taking place at the home to the 2015 NAIAS at the COBO Center in downtown Detroit, Michigan along the banks of the Detroit River overlooking Windsor, Canada.
The city of Detroit and Shell invites citizens and enthusiasts to welcome the student teams and take part in the activities surrounding Shell Eco-marathon Americas. In addition to the mileage challenge street runs, the public is invited to a free, interactive journey to explore Shells energy future exhibits while visiting Shell Eco-marathon Americas on April 10-12, 2015 at the Cobo Center.
