Why the Deprotagonizing of GM's?

In the Pundit's most recent post he talked about the pressure in the hobby to devalue/deprotagonize/demonize the role of the traditional GM, e.g., "everything gets decided by group consensus."

What's up with this? Why does it get suggested so frequently? Why if you suggest you don't agree it's because there is something wrong with you (you like controlling games, you're on a power trip, you're not a fan of the players, etc.)

The reason it confuses me is that I've had only a handful of bad GM's, all of my great gaming experiences have in some degree had to do with the GM. Also, and this is anecdotal, but the games most people are actually playing most of the time (apart from Internet buzz) are games with more traditional GM roles.
