My commute is 110 miles one way and almost all highway. I recently purchased a 2014 Civic Hybrid (rated 44 city / 47 hwy) and after reading a bit of your advice for beginners, I am able to achieve the following averages for a one-way highway trip:
I use five techniques:
NOTE: I have been unable to achieve more than 56 mpg without drafting transfer trucks. My best single-day mpg rating was 64 mpg and I drafted transfer trucks going 63mph for almost the entire one-way commute.

- bad day - 53mpg
- average day - 56mpg
- great day - 60mpg
I use five techniques:
- gradual acceleration and braking using instruments to maintain best efficiency
- maintain highway speed of 63-68
- use instruments to keep consumption in the green on inclines
- coasting down declines and to stop lights
- drafting transfer trucks
