2015 Audi A3 passing with flying colors during the IIHS Small Overlap crash test. The FWD TDI variant starts at $32,600 + D&H with a 31/43 mpgUS city/highway rating.
To begin, all 2015 Audi A3s include leather seating surfaces, power panoramic roof, Bluetooth with streaming audio, SiriusXM, HD radio, power driver’s seat, split folding rear seatback and Audi pre sense basic. The A3 line-up also arrives with the Audi signature Singleframe grille, bi-xenon headlights, and LED taillights.
Outside the A3 Sedan has been completely redesigned for the North American marketplace including a length of 175.5 inches, a width of 70 inches, a height of 55.7 inches all riding a platform with 103.4 inches between the axles.
The new platform uses MacPherson struts with A-arms and aluminum pivot bearings joined to an aluminum subframe up front. Out back, the TDI does not receive the independent four-link rear suspension like the non-TDI (heard it was because of the Urea tank?) but instead uses a less expansive torsion beam setup.
With an all new body, the 2015 A3 TDI now has a Cd of 0.30.
Inside the A3 provides a truly “wraparound” dash with a three-dimensional inlay surrounding the driver and front passenger. The available LED interior lighting package is a step above.
New display technology from NVIDIA generates complex three-dimensional images used in all online, voice control, media navigation and telephone functions.
On the infotainment front, Audi connect includes picture navigation, read-aloud news headlines, Facebook and Twitter alerts, access to more than 7,000 Web radio stations, personalized RSS news feeds and more. Also available in the A3 family is Audi drive select, this system allows the driver to adjust throttle response, shift points, and the electromechanical steering effort. Similar to other Audi models, Audi drive select has four settings that include Auto, Dynamic, Comfort, and Individual.
The MMI navigation plus uses 4G LTE to deliver the tailored services of Audi connect to the driver – from navigation with Google Earth and Google Street View to Audi and online traffic information. Audi and AT&T have teamed to offer U.S. Audi drivers the expected first-ever in-vehicle 4G LTE data connection.
Audi A3 Sedan Safety
The all-new 2015 Audi A3 and S3 sedans just earned a 5-Star overall crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program. The 5-star rating complements the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating the Audi A3 sedan (when equipped with Audi pre sense front) received earlier this year.
NHTSA Crash Test Vehicles are rated on a scale of one to five stars, one being the lowest rating and five being the highest.
The Audi A3 and S3 offer several technologies including standard Audi pre sense basic system which helps detect when an emergency maneuver is being made and prepares the vehicle and its occupant restraint systems in advance of a possible collision. The A3 also introduces secondary collision brake assist and is the only vehicle to offer this system as a standard feature. The system automatically brakes the car after a collision so as to prevent a secondary collision with nearby or oncoming traffic.
Earlier this year, the Audi A3 was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for models equipped with Audi pre sense front (part of the model’s optional Advanced Technology Package – which also includes Audi active lane assist and Audi adaptive cruise control with stop & go).
2015 Audi A3 and S3 NHTSA 5-Star Crash test Rating
Under NHTSA’s Crash Test Program, vehicles undergo rigorous frontal, side barrier, pole intrusion and rollover tests. Instruments measure force of impact to various body regions on crash test dummies to determine a rating. 5-Star Safety Ratings are posted on the Monroney labels (window stickers) that are required to be displayed on all new vehicles.
To qualify for 2014 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must meet the Top Safety Pick criteria, plus earn a basic, advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
