Had something weird happen twice now. Don't remember outside air temp when it happened the first time, but it happened again today with temps in upper 20's.
Both times I had went out to the van at lunch time and plugged it in. It was plugged in about 4 hours before I left for the day. The van has a block heater that screws into a block plug spot on the driver side of engine, and a hot pad type heater on the oil pan. The block heater is not the thermostaticly controlled one - if it's plugged in its on.
Both times I made it about 8-10 miles before getting an error message on the dash - "engine hot - a/c off".
The first time I was in a drive thru and shut the van off. When I went to restart I got the message and the van wouldn't restart until I cleared codes via scan gauge. A bunch of pissed off people behind me and I didn't catch the code. No Check Engine Light.
Today I was on the interstate, same error message popped up. I checked the codes, got a po116 - coolant temperature sensor, and noticed the coolant gauge on dash was not reading anything, but coolant temperature on scan gauge was normal, about 190. As soon as I cleared the code, the van felt like power came on, like it was in some reduced power mode due to the temp not reading anything or something. Again, no CEL.
Anyway, I'm thinking I shouldn't plug in if it's above mid 20's outside air temp?
any other thoughts or knowledge on this?
I know they make 2 block heaters for this thing. One with a temp control and one without. Maybe this is why?
