Is discussing RPGs a hobby unto itself?

Specifically things like "white room" analysis, demi-human level limits and skill vs. class-based systems. I'm not being disparaging here at all; it just appears to me that talking about gaming is a separate and distinct hobby from actually playing them. More so than similar meta discussions for other hobbies.

For instance, my dad is in a model airplane club. The flying part probably takes up 10-15% of the time, with the rest devoted to bs sessions. They do talk about the models themselves, but it's usually technical (what sort of motor to use for instance) and directly related to being able to fly the planes. Contrast this with RPGs where half of the threads on message boards have nothing to do with actually playing the game and instead are simply theories based on supposition. It's one thing to say a particular servo is better for a plane because the range is better and doesn't drain the battery as quickly and another thing completely to extol the virtues of some saving throw system when you've never played the game and have no plans on doing so.

Another example: I used to be in a sportbike racing club. We'd have arguments at length about what bike was the best for what purpose. But then we'd actually ride the bikes and time ourselves and say, okay, this bike is faster or whatever. People who offered opinions but didn't ride were mostly ignored completely. So, why is it that in RPGs the largest voices are the ones with the least experience in playing the games they talk about so much?
