My wife is starting a new job where she'll be driving a fair bit. She'll be covering sales for a large, spread out city with lots of traffic. I'm not exactly sure what her driving pattern is going to look like, but I imagine that she'll drive up to 20 miles, hit multiple places that are close by and then drive back.
Our current car (2004 Hyundai Accent) won't work because it's a stick shift and apparently too old to be covered by her work's insurance. They are giving her a generous car allowance and mileage, so I'm not going to complain. We'll be buying used since it's quite a savings.
It's our only car, I mainly ride my bike or walk. Sometimes we take longer (300 mile) camping trips.
Needs:
Relatively new
Automatic Transmission
Reliability that can hit $200k miles
$10,000 or less
Wants:
Cargo space, in particular enough to throw our bikes in the back
Not a hybrid. Don't want to deal with the high up front cost or increased difficulty of service.
The wife isn't really a hypermiler but I'm trying to get her into it. She currently gets about 3-5 mpg less than I do on the Hyundai Accent. There's no real guarantee here that she's going to do anything other than drive it around normally. She doesn't really get excited over efficiency, so who knows how she'll react to a ScanGauge.
Our short list currently has:
Honda Fit
Toyota Matrix
Hyundai Elantra hatchback
Any suggestions?
