I've been trying to homebrew 5e monsters for my campaign lately and when I compare the guidelines in the Dungeon Master's Guide to the examples from the Monster Manual the numbers are usually off. Like, way off, especially in the hit point department.
Now I UNDERSTAND monster math is not an exact science, and I UNDERSTAND that discrepancies in some parts of a monster can be made up for in other parts. But I want to hear from anyone who has had more experience with the monster builder; does it work as intended, or am I setting up my party of 1st level characters for risks higher than intended?

How good are 5e's monster design guidelines?
