2016 Jaguar XE Sports Sedan – Pricing is TBA and it promises scary good efficiency. As in close to 45 mpg highway with an all-new Ingenium 2.0L Turbo Diesel and 8-speed AT or an MT in RWD/AWD configurations.

Detroit – At this year’s 2015 North American Auto Show (#NAIAS), an iconic luxury performance marque boldly introduced something that will catch your attention just as it has mine.

Normally U.S. luxury sport sedans are loaded with big power which in turn creates big bills at the pump. Jaguar was no different in the past. That is about to change.

This week Jaguar introduced all-new advanced technology turbo diesel powertrain(s) and will make them available on every model they will sell in North America over the next 3 years. And for the first time, the company introduced its all-new XE sedan for the North American consumer that will arrive first with a hyper efficient 2.0L Turbo Diesel.

The Jaguar XE will arrive with a choice of 340 hp supercharged V6 or the company's new Ingenium 2.0L Turbo Diesel engine. Customers will also have a choice of RWD and AWD powertrain options which will be offered in both manual and automatic transmissions.

2016 Jaguar Ingenium Turbo Diesel(s)

The all-new Ingenium turbo diesels were designed and engineered in-house by Jaguar Land Rover. It will drive the rear wheels of the high aluminum content XE sports sedan when it reaches North America later this year.

Starting from a clean sheet, the Ingenium engines was designed to be as light and efficient as possible and in the real world, over 2 million miles of real-world testing have been completed to date.

6 key features are instrumental in creating the expected efficiency. These include the following:

  • Roller bearings on cam and balancer shafts, instead of machined-in bearing surfaces

  • Computer-controlled variable oil pumps that save energy by delivering the optimum amount of oil at all speeds, engine loads and temperatures

  • Computer-controlled variable water pumps that adjust the amount of coolant flowing through the engine, based on temperature, speed and driving conditions. The split or twin circuit cooling system offers the twin benefits of lowering C02 emissions by enabling fast warm ups, and providing quick cabin heat on cold days

  • Simplified cam drive system designed for modular application

  • Crankshafts that are offset from the center of the block

  • Electronically controlled piston cooling jets to improve efficiency in the oil pumping circuit. Jets are switched off when piston cooling is not needed. They also enable the engine to reach its optimum operating temperature faster, further helping to reduce C02 emissions

The low friction, all-aluminum engines have stiff cylinder blocks and twin balancer shafts to ensure low NVH. A bit out of my league but the low NVH has a lot to do with an acoustic sump cover, decoupled injectors, and 0.5mm ovality on the injection pump drive sprocket according to the company docs.

Globally the all-new XE will feature two versions of the 2.0L Ingenium turbo diesel. The first, rated at 161 hp and 280 lb-ft. of torque is rated at an incredible 62 mpgUS combined on the NEDC – maybe 48 mpgUS combined on the EPA - without any compromise to launch performance or mid-range acceleration. We will not be receiving this variant.

A 178 hp and 317 lb-ft. of torque variant of the 2.0L will reach our shores for the first time in the lightweight XE.

Set to meet both the EU6 and EPA Tier II and even Tier III emissions specifications, the engines include variable exhaust valve timing to shorten the CAT light-off that also improves diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. The cooled low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system reduces combustion chamber temperatures that reduce NOx formation. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with UREA injection cuts NOx emissions.

The Ingenium turbo diesel range is produced at a new 1 million sq. ft. facility in the West Midlands UK. The company added that the line can produce one of these world class engines every 36 seconds.

2016 Jaguar XE Sports Sedan Overview

The lightweight aluminum-intensive Jaguar XE sports sedan is constructed from a large percentage of advanced heat treated aluminum sculpted into a modern aerodynamic sedan. It will arrive with a Cd of just 0.26 due in part to millions hours of computation time. It is constructed from a new JLR modular vehicle architecture with a long wheelbase and low seating position creating the low racing coupe-like profile. The S model's large front air intakes, chrome side vents, discreet rear spoiler and optional 20 in forged alloys give it the over the top appearance.

As seen on the floor of the 2015 NAIAS.

On a sizing front, the all-new XE is 183.9 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, 55.7 inches tall, and weighs just 3,249 pounds (U.K. spec with the Supercharged 3.0L). Expect it to arrive in the 3,450 lb range with the 2.0L turbo diesel.

2016 Jaguar XE Chassis

Jaguar expertise in working with aluminum has culminated in the revolutionary body structure of the new Jaguar XE. Much of the aluminum is high-strength, military grade 6000-series alloy.

The body sides are complex pressings formed in one piece, and what would once have been 1.5mm gauge sheet has been reduced to just 1.1mm.

Riveting and bonding the lightweight body structure of the Jaguar XE consumes less energy than traditional spot welding. The XE also contains 101 lbs. of recycled plastics and renewable materials, further reducing its environmental impact.

Up front is race car inspired double wishbone suspension. The aluminum front spindles are light and stiff - forged from cast blanks using a patented production process. Out back the suspension features an integral link system. This system delivers lateral and longitudinal stiffness for precise handling and a supple ride. Aluminum has been used extensively in the suspension, minimizing weight.

Offering incredible tuning possibilities and greater efficiency than traditional hydraulic systems, electric power steering (EPAS) will be standard on the XE.

2016 Jaguar XE Interior

Like all Jaguars, a no holds barred full luxuriously appointed interior define the brand. Inside the cabin offers fine crafted materials and finishes, combined with traditional Jaguar craftsmanship suitable for the top notch luxury buyer.

Front and rear seat occupants enjoy generous amounts of head and legroom while surrounded with fine-grain leather and contrasting twin-needle stitching. The choice of gloss black, textured aluminum, and contemporary wood veneers enhance the luxurious, hand-crafted feel. Available ambient lighting in a range of up to 10 colors adds to the sense of occasion.

2016 Jaguar XE Drivetrain(s)

When the XE goes on sale in 2016 in North America it will be equipped with a standard 340 hp and 332 lb-ft. of torque supercharged 3.0L V6 mated to an 8-speed AT with a rotary shifter and steering wheel shift paddles. Accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, the XE S has an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

The aforementioned 2.0L Ingenium Turbo Diesel mated to a similar 8-speed AT will allow the dash to 60 to be completed in the mid 6s and what was described as a highway rating of up to 45 mpgUS here in the U.S.

The upcoming XE is manufactured at an all-new Jaguar Land Rover facility at the Solihull U.K. plant.

2016 Jaguar XE Infotainment

The all-new Jaguar InControl infotainment system offered on the XE provides the latest technologies to connect the car, driver and the outside world. At its heart is an eight-inch capacitive touchscreen featuring a clear, intuitive interface and fast response times.

InControl Touch supports Bluetooth, audio streaming and USB connectivity. The Jaguar XE can also be fitted with an SD card-based navigation system which allows easy upgrades of map data, and voice control using plain speech without having to navigate through screen menus. Both systems feature a user-friendly map which can be utilized by touch and directed by pinch-to-zoom.

Jaguar InControl Apps allows users to seamlessly access and control smartphone apps through the vehicle's touchscreen. With a subscribed data plan, the Jaguar XE can also function as a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling multiple devices to connect to the internet.

Jaguar InControl Remote functionality allows users of iOS and Android smartphones to connect to the car remotely to control car functions. These include seven-day timed pre-setting of the vehicle's climate control system, locking or unlocking the doors, or remote starting of the engine.

The new Jaguar XE will be available with a range of Meridian audio systems. These systems are the latest product of the long-standing partnership between Jaguar and British audio experts Meridian. Unique algorithms guarantee the best possible sound reproduction and tailor the experience to the interior's acoustics. Available systems range from 250 watt, 11-speaker systems to 825 watt, 15-speaker systems, both equipped with stereo and surround sound processors.

I have never heard a modern Jaguars audio system or worked their InControl so it will be a while before hands on to provide an impression.

Jaguar XE Safety

The new light and stiff body structure of the Jaguar XE has been engineered to meet the toughest consumer crash test requirements in the world. Namely, the IIHS Small Overlap.

Advanced driver assistance systems are also standard. The company’s All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) was developed from decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems. Functioning between 2 mph and 19 mph, ASPC is designed to precisely control the brake system and powertrain to deliver optimum traction in slippery conditions.

Projecting high-contrast color images onto the windshield, an optional laser heads-up display (HUD) technology provides the driver with basic NAVI and instrument information.

An optional Stereo camera technology is key to the cars autonomous emergency braking system. The XE provides measurements of speed and distance of objects ahead, and can initiate full braking to avoid or mitigate a collision. The stereo camera also performs traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning functions as part of the autonomous emergency braking system package.

The XE also features adaptive cruise control, closing vehicle sensing, blind spot monitoring, semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking, and reverse traffic detection.

All told, who would have thought a Jaguar would provide an efficient performance sedan to the U.S.? It will without a doubt be on our list of must drives of the iconic marques first fuel efficient offering once it arrives.

Of all the releases at the 2015 NAIAS Detroit Show, this was one of the most eye opening. Congrats to Jaguar for following through with a new direction for much of their lineup using the power and efficiency of the turbo diesel.
