One of many turbo 4-pots in the running

Volvo's new line of Drive-E 2.0L 4-cylinder engines received a new accolade in December when WardsAuto selected the 240hp “T5” variant as one of their 10 Best Engines of 2015. Engines were selected by Wards editors based on a variety of parameters including but not limited to power, drivability, noise, and observed fuel economy.
The Drive-E moniker represents a system of fuel-saving technologies centered around 2.0L 4-cylinder engines with direct injection and varying levels of forced induction. Auxiliary technologies include a wide-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission, automatic stop/start, brake energy regeneration via the alternator, and driver-selectable “ECO+” mode which adjusts throttle response, transmission programming, and climate control in favor of maximizing fuel economy.
Drive-E engines began to displace Volvo's less efficient 5- and 6-cylinder engines in front wheel drive applications beginning in 2014 and will ultimately power every gasoline and diesel-fueled Volvo passenger vehicle. Drive-E technology boosts EPA combined cycle fuel economy by between 20 and 30 percent in 2015 vehicles compared to 2014s with older but comparably powerful drive trains. Future plans include adding hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology, such as the “T8” plug-in hybrid version of the completely redesigned XC90 SUV which is expected to arrive on US soil in mid-2015.
Author's note: For the sake of full disclosure, I actually spent my own money to get a car with this engine. Expect more extensive fuel economy results and driving impressions once we get out of the deep-freeze.
