2016 Nissan Titan XD intro from the floor of the 2015 NAIAS.
Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan: "The new Titan was engineered at our Michigan Technical Center, it was designed in California and it was tested at our proving grounds in Arizona. Titan's V8 and V6 engine will be built at Nissan Powertrain plant in Tennessee. And of course Titan will be continued to be built in Canton, MS."
Detroit. Michigan – Nissan dedicated its Detroit presentation to the all-new 2016 Titan with the upcoming 5.0L Cummins.
The 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup combines the Cummins turbo diesel engine and totally redesigned TITAN in an area that Nissan is calling a new segment in the North American market.
The new TITAN XD offers effortless towing and hauling capability of the larger, more expensive ¾ and 1-Ton heavy-duty trucks yet was purposely designed with the fuel-efficiency and affordability of half-ton pickups. It is projected to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in the fall of 2015.
Powered by the much anticipated all-new Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, the 2016 TITAN XD will have a maximum towing capacity of more than 12,000 pounds and maximum payload of more than 2,000 pounds.
The TITAN XD will also be available with the company’s RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides, highly regarded Around View Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD) and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation. Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and a Front and Rear Sonar System will also be available.

Meet the all-new Titan XD
The all-new Titan will be available as a TITAN XD with the Cummins, Crew Cab, King Cab and standard cab configurations, two frame sizes and several bed lengths.
Regarding the TITAN XD, the design team formed the sheet metal around the Cummins turbo diesel engine nestled within the engine bay on top of a fully-boxed ladder frame.
The front end of the new TITAN and TITAN XD with both TITAN and Cummins badging look tough. It will also be available with LED headlights and DRLs.
The current generation TITAN uses a three-piece front bumper whereas the all-new TITAN uses an integrated single-piece design. The bumper is flush with the fascia and the wiper arms and windshield washer nozzles are hidden from sight.
The TITAN includes a spray-on bedliner, integrated cargo tie-down systems, LED bed rail lighting, a more flexible storage box design, cargo and tailgate lamps, 120-volt in-bed access and a damped tailgate that is light to lift and smoothly damped when lowering.
4-wheel discs are of course standard fare.
The waterproof, drainable, lockable and removable storage boxes were moved into the bed vs. the current generation.
Other key exterior design elements include improved aerodynamics through use of items such as rear tire spats, cab to bed air gap flaps, integrated spoilers for the front, roof and tailgate, and underbody covers.
2016 Nissan Titan XD Interior Design
Some of my favorite seats will be made available. Those being the Nissan spec’ed NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seats and a large center console. A new ergonomic 4-spoke tilt and telescoping wheel, chrome finishes, stitched trim and work-scaled knobs with ergonomic grips are also standard.
To keep road noise intrusion into the cabin down, laminated side glass is standard.
Sorry the interior pic is a little dark.
The TITAN's driver’s 5.0 inch LCD message center display can show text messages, navigation, and std. engine parameters.
A lockable storage compartment under the rear seat is perfect securing small items. There's also a convenient fold-out rear floor panel, available when the rear seat is folded up, for carrying and securing large items.
The bottle holders in the doors can now hold 20-once cups, the console can hold 32-ounce sports drink bottles and the overhead sunglasses bin now holds a much wider range of sports-styled sunglasses.
A 7.0-inch color touch-screen central display handles the infotainment needs with the available NissanConnect Navigation and Mobile Apps, SiriusXM and Rockford Fosgate audio system with 12 speakers.
We have been hinting about this for over 3-months given the 310 hp and 555 lb-ft. of torque 5.0L Cummins is so powerful it makes little sense to be placed in a half-ton with half-ton specs. With that in mind, the next-generation Nissan TITAN crosses over and covers the lighter half-ton market with a truck that does Heavy Duty work but not at the cost of a ¾ ton that the Big 3 upcharge for.
Plenty of room with the full sized all-new Titan.
Carlos Ghosn added that the with all-new Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup,

The Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel
The 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel uses an industry standard low NVH producing compacted graphite iron (CGI) block, forged steel crankshaft, high-strength aluminum alloy heads, and composite valve covers and dual overhead cams.
The Cummins M² Two-Stage series sequential turbocharging system uses two different sized turbochargers. Small for low RPM quick power without lag and a larger turbo for big hp output.
In order to control the air flow between the two turbo chargers, the new M² system uses a patented rotary valve to open ports that perform the bypass or waste-gate functionality and provide exhaust after-treatment thermal management.
High injection pressures from Bosch consists of industry standard piezo-electric fuel injectors to optimize in-cylinder combustion for improved fuel economy and lower emissions.
According to Cummins, their advanced ceramic glow plugs significantly reduce start time and electrical current draw, reducing vehicle charging system requirements in cold temperatures. The ceramic glow plugs are designed to last the life of the engine, with no maintenance.
A two-stage fuel filter system using Cummins latest NanoNet media - traps greater than 99 percent of all particles as small as 4 microns - ensures that the fuel system is fully protected against fuel contamination.
As we wrote about from the Chicago Auto Show floor last year with the introduction of the 2.8L Cummins prototype in the Frontier, Cummins extensive emissions technology is possibly the best turbo diesel emissions system ever used in a turbo diesel.

Cummins Two-Stage Turbocharger, cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Cummins Emission Solutions Aftertreatment System, featuring a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) within the same small canister housing result in near-zero oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions while delivering monster performance and excellent fuel economy.
Jeff Caldwell, Cummins General Manager – Global Pickup Business:
Quote:
"Pickup truck owners have very specific needs and capability has always ranked high on the list and with increasing fuel prices, efficiency is a close second. The new TITAN XD is capable of meeting both of those needs at once, as opposed to only being able to have great fuel economy or great performance. Light-duty pickup owners should not have to sacrifice fuel economy when they want to put their truck to work." |
Another highlight from the 2015 North American International Auto Show (#NAIAS2015) was a 45 minute roundtable discussion with journalists with Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and José Muñoz, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Chairman, Nissan North America, Inc.
A key statement by Mr. Goshn occurred at 22 minutes into the Q&A: "We are 7th in trucks. So obviously we have to push a little bit more on trucks..."
"The large pickup truck where we have one percent market share ... I do not think we have any merit if we improve this. The right reasonable target would be 5 (percent)."
The new TITAN XD Crew Cab is the first of three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels to be available later in the Nissan TITAN lineup.
2016 Nissan Titan XD Early Conclusions
It is a nice looking truck with a bold face, tough look, and a very comfortable interior.
Two key misses as it tries to cross over to the Heavy Duty segment is a smallish 26-gallons tank and no 5/7 pin harness within the bed for a fifth or gooseneck trailer. Little can be done about the former this late in the design stage but the latter has been reported by James and is moving up the chain.
Efficiency has not yet been revealed yet Nissan stated the XD with the Cummins diesel is expected to provide a projected 20 percent better fuel economy than a gasoline-powered V8 while towing full loads. With just one rear end ratio, I suspect it will be geared more towards capability than efficiency and the above statement can mean just about anything.
Ride? Given Nissan’s focus on comfortable ride within its CUV lineup, I suspect the Titan will be equipped with a softer ride than a firmer one yet still have the ability to tow that 12,000 + pounds in a safe manner.
