More aggressive grille and fascia, projector LEDs, new wheels and even more advanced safety technology highlight the update.
2016 Lexus ES from the floor of the Shanghai International Motor Show
Lexus’ ES refresh was introduced on the floor of the Shanghai International Motor Show indicating how important China will be in Toyota’s sales plans going forward.
2016 Lexus ES Exterior Refresh
Just a week after our 2015 Lexus ES 300h drive review, the 2016 ES refresh was introduced to the world in China sporting a new front fascia with a taller Lexus’s trademark spindle grille with bolder slats framed in a much thicker satin chrome surround. A pair of newly designed wraparound headlamps now incorporate all-new LED projectors and “L”-shaped arrowhead Daytime Running Lights (DRL) that extend outside the headlight element. Redesigned fog lamps are now located lower and further out to the corners within a faceted cutout vs. the chrome round trimmed lamps in the current ES.
Out back a chrome license plate surround flows visually into new lamps with chrome-tipped rectangular exhaust ports finishing off the exterior.
Inside the refreshed 2016 ES
Like the current ES, the refreshed ES surrounds its occupants in luxury.
The 2016 ES includes new interior color combinations including seats offered in four different colors and three trim materials: semi-aniline leather, leather and Lexus NuLuxe. An embossed pattern has been added to the seats for 2016.
First appearing in the GS and LS sedans, the high end Bamboo trim with the Shimamoku finish was created through a multi-step hand manufactured process by highly skilled craftsmen.
A new wheel is said to provide better driving engagement. The Remote Touch Interface (RTI) has been modified with “Enter” buttons on either side of the interface controller. I really like the Gen 2 in the current 15 ES and hope Lexus did not mess with its action and feedback to much.
2016 Lexus ES Chassis Upgrades
The 2016 ES includes structural reinforcements improving stiffness that is said to improve ride quality and handling. A sound-reducing layer behind the dashboard is supposed to reduce engine noise intrusion into the cabin.
2016 Lexus ES Safety Upgrades
The ES offers Lexus Safety System + including the Pre-Collision System (PCS) with a millimeter-wave radar and front-facing camera. The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) employs a camera to keep track of visible lane marking lines on the road. If the vehicle begins to unintentionally deviate from the lane, the LDA system will notify the driver with an audio-visual alert and vibration to the steering wheel. An Automatic High Beam (AHB) senses headlights from oncoming traffic and the taillight of the car in front, automatically adjusting hi-beam and low-beam illumination. The Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the speed of the vehicle ahead in order to adjust the cruise control speed setting accordingly. This system also uses a combination of millimeter-wave radar and camera to detect a lane change by the vehicle in front for smooth acceleration and deceleration control.
2016 Lexus ES Early Conclusions
The new face of Lexus is alive and well within the refreshed ES. The 2.5L Camry Hybrid motor will keep it more than competitive from a performance and efficiency balance standpoint. With the most advanced safety equipment, it has indeed been improved. I wonder what they have in store when it comes to using some of the upcoming 2016 Prius’ more efficient drivetrain or when those updates will reach a future 300h? 2018 maybe?
