2015 Ford F-150 – $27,040 incl. D&H to start – RWD XL with the 2.7L EcoBoost and 6-speed AT – which offers owners a 19/26 mpgUS city/highway rating.

The 2015 Ford F-150 is built from a high-strength military-grade, 2013 aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame. High-strength steel in the frame was increased from 23 percent to 77 percent over its predecessor creating a pickup frame that is stronger, more durable and structurally more rigid. Thousands of crash test simulations were conducted to help ensure its structural integrity in front, side, rear and rollover impacts.

Along with front, side and side curtain airbags, Ford improved passive safety further with available inflatable rear safety belts that help distribute crash force energy across more of the torso than the traditional safety belt.

On the active front, the 2015 F-150 incorporates AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, Curve Control and Trailer Sway Control systems.

Other safety systems added for the 2015 model include the following:
  • Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with a minor type of brake support that uses radar in the front of the truck to measure the distance and speed of vehicles ahead. Using this information, the F-150 can automatically slow to keep a consistent following distance set by the driver. The slower speed will be maintained if adaptive cruise control is activated. Collision warning triggers visual and audio alerts if the system detects the following distance is diminishing too quickly and a collision may occur. It also pre-charges the brakes if the driver needs to stop suddenly.

  • Curve Control helps safely reduce speed when the driver enters a turn too quickly by automatically reducing torque and applying four-wheel braking. This can reduce vehicle speed by up to 10 mph in approximately one second, assisting drivers to stay on their intended path.

  • Smart Trailer Tow module shows the driver which lights on a trailer connected to the truck aren’t working, so the driver or a passenger doesn’t have to get out of the truck and walk around the trailer to personally find blown lights.

  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert uses radar sensors in the taillamps to monitor areas that may not be visible to the driver. The sensors trigger a warning light in the sideview mirrors to indicate another vehicle is in a blind spot if the driver is attempting to change lanes. These same sensors can also detect a vehicle coming down an aisle when the driver is slowly backing out of a parking space.

  • Lane-Keep system is designed to help prevent a driver from drifting outside of the intended driving lane. The system automatically detects the left- or right-hand road lane markings using a camera mounted between the windshield and interior rearview mirror. A vibration in the steering wheel is used to alert the driver. The system can also provide steering torque to help guide the vehicle back into the lane.

  • LED headlamps that not only improve general nighttime visibility, they vastly decrease the reflection when driving during heavy snow.

  • 360-degree camera view to create a bird’s-eye view of the truck out to 7 feet using four exterior cameras.

  • Hill Descent Control uses the ABS to give the driver very slow speed control while descending a hill.

  • TPMS with individual tire pressure monitoring.
2015 Ford F-150 NHTSA Crash Test Ratings

The all-new Ford F-150 has just received the government’s highest possible crash safety rating of 5-stars on the NHTSA.

The 2015 F-150 is the only full-size, light-duty truck to earn NHTSA’s highest rating, a 5-star crash test rating, for the driver and passenger for all crash test modes and cab configurations.

The F-150’s improved performance is enabled by the use of high-strength steel in the frame; high-strength, military-grade, 2013 aluminum alloy in the body; and excellent crash energy misdirection engineering.

A cross-functional group comprised of Ford truck product development worked to optimize vehicle crashworthiness. The team created 31 safety-related innovations including new structures, materials and joining methods that were tested virtually with supercomputer simulations, then retested in Ford’s advanced laboratories to engineer the safest F-150 ever.

Ford F-150 Crash Test Competitive Comparison

Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, RAM 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

In the competitive comparison chart, only the 2015 Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra can match the overall score of 5-stars of the 2015 Ford F-150. It however has a slightly lower 4 of 5-stars on the side pole test. The RAM and Tundra fall back to an overall 4-star crash test rating on the NHTSA test regimen.

2015 Ford F-150

Ford was not kidding when they stated this is their toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever.

All-in, this was a good job by Ford. When we see an IIHS crash test results including the small overlap, I will add an update to this story.
