A randomizer, a few basic rules, a way to keep records, and some spare time. That's all you really need to play an RPG, and some would even argue the necessity of those. This seems like an ideal pass-time for a world of limited resources and long winters, yet as far as I know it all started with D&D in the 70s (more or less, excluding the longer history of wargames).
What factors* prevented RPGs from being developed much earlier in human history? Or is there a case for some RPGs having existed before the 20th century?
* Thinking beyond peasant classes.
